When you’ve worked on a home renovation for this many years, some rooms start to live in your imagination long before they exist in real life. I can’t calculate the time I’ve spent fantasizing about what life will feel like in our new spaces—and the place my brain has spent the most time living in is, without a doubt, our primary bedroom.

Over the past five years of planning and permitting our Malibu beach house remodel, I’ve found myself drifting into daydreams of quiet mornings—waking up in a sun-drenched, Japandi-inspired bedroom, opening the French doors to let the ocean breeze carry in the scent of orange blossoms, and hearing the waves crash on Zuma Beach below. It’s the first place I go in my mind when I imagine the home being finished, and the vibe I’ve always envisioned is minimalist, calming, and deeply connected to nature.

For today’s installment of Renovation Diaries, I’m excited to share a first look at the architectural renderings of the Primary Bedroom and Bathroom, along with the design feature that will anchor the space.

A Built-In Bed to Ground the Room

Whenever I share photos of our Austin home, one of the top questions I get is about our bed. Designing and working with a team to custom build it was one of the best decisions we made, so I knew I wanted to design and construct something just as special for our Malibu bedroom.

A custom-built bed feels fully integrated into the architecture of the space—solid and grounded, minimal and inviting. Built from natural wood, the design will include a low platform that extends beyond the mattress, doubling as nightstand ledges on either side. It eliminates the need for separate furniture, keeping the visual landscape clean and serene. This decision was rooted in the Japandi philosophy of intentional simplicity: Everything has a purpose, and nothing is extraneous.

Warm Lighting with Hanging Pendants

Rather than using traditional bedside lamps, we’re opting for pendant lights to hang above each side of the bed. This simple switch instantly makes the space feel more modern and elevated. The pendants free up surface space on the nightstands, add sculptural interest, and provide a warm, downward glow perfect for evening reading. We’re currently sourcing options in woven materials to echo the natural elements throughout the room.

Ocean Views Through French Doors

One of the elements I’m most excited for will be the French doors that open directly onto a patio facing the ocean. The doors are framed in natural wood and designed to blur the lines between indoors and out. To the left, the patio will lead to an outdoor sauna, making the suite feel like a wellness retreat within the home. When the doors are open, the scent of the sea and the sounds of waves will drift throughout the space.

Vaulted Ceilings and a Palette Inspired by Nature

One of the biggest changes we’re making to the home is vaulting as many of the ceilings as possible to make each room feel more airy and open. We leaned into that spaciousness by keeping the materials palette grounded in nature: light-toned woods, warm neutral textiles, and soft stone finishes. The goal? To create a Japandi-inspired bedroom that feels like a true place to relax and exhale.

A Fireplace Rooted in Scandinavian Design

Since open-flame fireplaces aren’t allowed in this area of Malibu, we’re installing a VITA Vapor fireplace from Custom Fireplace & Design. It gives the cozy ambiance of a real fire without the safety concerns—and it’s city-approved. This particular model produces a beautiful, flickering vapor that mimics flame and adds a soothing focal point at the end of the bed. On cooler evenings, I imagine curling up under a linen throw, the vapor fireplace casting a gentle glow across the room.

A Light-Filled Bathroom With a Freestanding Tub

Let’s move into the Japandi-inspired bathroom—designed to be the most serene, light-filled spot in the house. The first piece we chose for this room was the Duravit Soleil by Starck Freestanding Bathtub. It’s sculptural and simple, with clean lines that echo the calm of the bedroom. Next to it, we’re installing a floor-to-ceiling window that brings in gorgeous natural light.

To maintain privacy, we’re building a stone wall outside the window—high enough to offer seclusion, with beautiful stone detail that will feel like part of the room’s decor. We’re using Country Rubble in Bella, from Eldorado Stone.

Soft and Textured: Roman Clay Walls

Choosing the right wall finish has been a major decision, as we’re planning to lock on one shade of plaster and use it throughout the entire house. After living with sample swatches for weeks, we narrowed it down to a few options from Portola Paints’ Roman Clay collection.

Initially, I wanted to try a soft terracotta on the walls of the Primary Bathroom, to add warmth and earthiness. But when we saw the 3D renderings comparing it to a cleaner white Roman Clay, the decision was clear in the way the white reflected the light and made the space feel more expansive. It just felt like the spa-like retreat we envisioned. The texture adds depth and softness to the walls, giving the entire room a handmade, organic feel without it feeling stark.

Unlacquered Brass Fixtures That Age Beautifully

We’re using unlacquered brass fixtures from Kallista’s One collection throughout the bathroom, and I love how they’ll patina over time. The warm tones of the brass add richness and depth, and they’re a subtle nod to the wabi-sabi beauty in imperfection. As the fixtures age and develop their character, they’ll add a rich sense of story to the home.

A Space-Saving Archway

Since the bathroom isn’t that big, we decided to remove the small set of doors pictured above and instead leave the entry to the primary closet open with an arched opening to create a sense of flow. This small design tweak makes the entire suite feel more expansive. The arch adds a soft architectural detail that ties in beautifully with the natural materials and curved forms elsewhere in the home.

A Streamlined, Hardworking Closet

To keep the bathroom feeling calm and clutter-free, I’ll be putting my vanity table in the closet where I’ll get ready. I’m working with California Closets to design a compact but efficient space that still feels serene and gets the job done. From pull-out organizers to soft-close drawers and integrated lighting, we’re intentionally designing every detail to simplify my daily routine and keep things beautiful in the process. I’ll share more on the design process of this space soon!

Tadelakt and Caesarstone: Dream Shower Combo

For the shower, we’re leaning toward using tadelakt—a traditional waterproof plaster that’s both gorgeous and highly functional. It has a smooth, slightly mottled surface that feels like stone but is sealed and water-resistant. For the shower floor, we’re considering using one of Caesarstone’s slip-resistant surfaces. The stone is so gorgeous and we’re using it in several spots through the house, so it feels both streamlined and cohesive with our minimalist palette.

Yes, I’m Excited About Our Toilet

If you didn’t know it was possible to get excited about a toilet, think again. We chose a wall-mounted ME by Starck Wall Mounted Toilet from Duravit, and it’s so functional and beautifully-designed. Sleek, minimal, and comfortable—it’s the kind of small luxury that elevates everyday routines in the best way.

It’s easy to make your bedroom’s design an afterthought. It was for me, anyway. I used to pour most of my design energy (and budget) into the more “public” rooms of my home because those were the spots that other people would see. Guests will roam through the kitchen, our living and dining room, even the downstairs powder room. But the bedroom is private, just for us—so I didn’t prioritize it. I didn’t realize this meant that, in a way, I was putting the needs of others before my own. Just because the bedroom is solely for my husband and I doesn’t mean that it deserves less love and care than our shared spaces. Perhaps, it actually means it needs more! Once I gave myself permission to makeover our space, bedroom decor ideas came flooding in.

Your bedroom should be a retreat—a place that feels calming, beautiful, and deeply personal. Whether you’d like to make small updates or give it a full refresh, simple changes can transform the energy of your room. Take it from me, there’s no need to wait to create the space of your dreams. As you continue to give your home the spring refresh it deserves, here are eight bedroom decor ideas that will breathe new life into your sanctuary.

Embrace Neutrals

If you need bedroom decor ideas, Camille’s is the perfect place to start. Her space could be the blueprint for a cozy and serene neutral bedroom. Neutral tones will keep your space from feeling too busy, and earth tones specifically will emit warmth and coziness. 

To give your own space the same vibe as Camille’s, embrace texture. Texture will keep a neutral space from feeling one-note, and Camille’s bedroom is full of different ones. Linen bedding, the knit blanket at the end of the bed, the cozy rug, gauzy curtains, and the warm wood tones of the bed all work to add variety and make the space feel balanced and inviting.

Take Advantage of Your Space

No matter how large or small your bedroom is, you want to utilize the real estate you’re given. That is to say, maximize every inch of your space! Whether you have large windows like Camille, or simply an empty corner—reimagine how you’d like to live in your bedroom. Would you like to romanticize how you get ready each day? Maybe your bedroom could use a vanity. Do you like to meditate or journal in the morning? A large, oversized chair in the corner would be a perfect addition. Or, perhaps you have extra wall space and a small desk for a mini office area. 

When I’m refreshing my space, one of my favorite things to do is to simply inhabit a corner or a spot I don’t normally go. The bedroom is the perfect place for this—stand in an empty corner, sit by an open wall space, and simply look around from a new perspective. What do you see? Add a Plant

Bedroom decor ideas don’t have to break the bank. I’m a firm believer that every room in your home should have at least one plant in it. In general, you don’t want to over-do it on bedroom decor, since this is the last place where you’d want to accumulate clutter. Greenery is the perfect pop of color a neutral bedroom needs (Camille’s bedroom, again, is a great example) and plants work well with color too. You can add a large plant like a rubber tree to a sunny corner, or stick with tabletop plants for your dresser or nightstand. 

Keep It Minimal

The bedroom is where you rest and recharge. Entering a room with clutter or an abundance of decor may not help you relax at the end of the day. Especially if your bedroom is on the smaller side, be intentional with your extras. Let a refresh be an opportunity to go through your items and only keep what you need and love. 

Opt for minimalism in your furniture and storage choices as well. Floating shelves can replace bulky nightstands for a more streamlined look, and keeping bins under your bed can provide much needed hidden storage. Instead of sparse and boring, rethink “minimal decor” as meaning intentional and streamlined.

Add Color

While neutrals create calm, the same can go for color—just the right ones. To infuse some color, consider switching up your bedding. Sage green, soft blues, and blush pinks are great for spring, whether you add a new duvet cover, sheets, or maybe just a throw or decorative pillow. Paint is another way to add a burst of color if you’re ready for a major change.

Go Monochromatic

Color drenching is a recent design trend that is sticking around, and a color-drenched bedroom can make you feel like you’re enveloped in a specific shade. Color drenching involves embracing one color and painting the walls, trim, and ceiling. Decor can be in various shades of the same color (or complimentary colors to the walls), and entering a color-drenched room should feel like stepping into a jewel box. 

Darker colors work well in a color-drenched bedroom, as it creates a cocooning effect. You can also color drench in a lighter color to keep the space vibrant and bright, depending on the vibe you’re going for. Radhi Devlukia-Shetty’s bedroom, shown here, is wrapped in a warm rust color—a fantastic earth tone for a calm and serene bedroom. 

Play With Pattern

Pattern comes in many forms, and adding some to your space will certainly liven it up. Start with what you like—are you drawn to floral patterns? Stripes? Toile? Add touches of pattern you love like bedding, pillows, or rugs to infuse more joy into your bedroom. And even if you’re not naturally drawn to bold patterns, subtle patterns can add much-needed texture to your space.

Bedroom decor ideas also include what’s on your walls. Wallpaper with a subtle pattern will add dimension, and can even come in handy if you’re color drenching. Instead of a matte paint color, wallpaper can work just as well, if not better, than a single paint color. 

Introduce Fragrance

The right scent can transform the ambiance of your space. Adding a soft, relaxing fragrance through pillow sprays, essential oil diffusers, or candles will take the energy of your bedroom to the next level. Candles and oil diffusers also act as bedroom decor, which is a plus. Opt for scents that are meant to calm you, like lavender or sandalwood. Pillow sprays can help lull you to sleep, aiding in a cozy evening ritual that will set you up for a good night’s rest. 

Refreshing your bedroom can mean a full makeover, or small, thoughtful changes that mindfully shift the feel of your space. Spring is the perfect time to dust off the old and welcome in what’s new. Focus on comfort, personalization, and simplicity to create a bedroom that feels like a true haven. Sweet dreams!

You might think that overhauling your bedroom is a whole process, but turns out, it only takes a weekend to switch things up. Whether you’re a renter or own your home, there are plenty of bedroom makeover ideas that can pull the room together. From changing out your bedding to adding creative visual touches, follow these ideas below to make the most of your Saturday and Sunday.

Rethink Your Bedding

Turn your bedroom into a soothing retreat that will actually help you relax after your hectic 9 to 5 by bringing in some stylish bedding. “New, fresh bedding has the potential to up the ante—and quickly,” says Charli Hendler, the founder of August Black Interior Design. “Opt for fresh white to mimic a hotel stay, or add some flair with a pattern.” Then, the designer says, weave in some new accent pillows and throw blankets to finish off the look. Paint the Walls a Moody Color

Never underestimate the power of paint. “A bedroom is a fun place to add a pop of color,” says Jewel Marlowe, the founder of Jeweled Interiors. “In fact, if there is a space to deviate from the color scheme of the rest of the home, the bedroom is a good choice.” With that, the designer says, why not go dark and moody? She recommends trying a dark blue like Farrow & Ball Inchyra or a deep brown like Benjamin Moore Hearthstone Brown. “The best part is that if you grow tired of it, you can always paint it back!”

Hang Peel and Stick Wallpaper

Not in the mood to paint? Take another DIY approach by installing peel-and-stick wallpaper, which Jess Harrell says will “add some depth and character to your bedroom walls.” If you don’t gravitate toward bold patterns, there’s no need to go wild. “Wallpaper doesn’t have to be bold and vibrant to make an impact,” says the founder of The Styled Domicile. “Subdued and understated can still pack a serious punch.”

Bring in New Lampshades

If your bedside lamps no longer reflect your style, simply swap out their shades. “I have recently switched all my lamp shades to a natural linen and it’s made all the difference,” says Caroline Z Hurley, the founder of CZH, who ordered hers from Etsy.

Alternatively, maximize precious square footage in a small bedroom by installing wall sconces beside the bed. “A time, budget, and renter-friendly alternative to doing electrical work for sconces is getting plug-in or battery operated ones,” notes Madison Massaro. Plus, the founder of Madison Lea Interiors adds, “Having wall lighting is really going to elevate your space and make it feel more custom. It will also free up the room on your nightstands for either decorative accents or just to have a cleaner look.” With hundreds of styles to choose from, you’ll surely have no problem choosing fixtures that speak to your aesthetic.

Switch Your Overhead Lighting

Similarly, think about swapping out your overhead light fixtures. (Possibly with the help of your apartment building’s super or a handy friend.) “If you have a ceiling fan, and you don’t need one to sleep, try swapping that out for a beautiful chandelier to add a more upscale feel,” suggests Melissa Fields, the founder of Shades of Gray Design Studio. If you’re renting, be sure to keep the original fixture somewhere safe to re-install it prior to moving out.

Rearrange Your Furniture

Looking for a zero-dollar approach that will still yield major results? Try rearranging your bedroom furniture. “Try placing your bed in a different spot or rethinking your storage solutions for a fresh perspective,” says Mina Lisanin, the founder of ML Interiors.

Display Some Photos 

Take time over the weekend to print out, frame, and hang photos that are meaningful to you and display them in your bedroom. “Private spaces like bedrooms are perfect for displaying family photos without the awkward portrait-above-the-mantel effect,” says Susan Yeley, the founder of Susan Yeley Homes. “It’s affordable and easy to frame them in off-the-rack frames and arrange them artfully above a highboy or nightstand.” Consider framing some of your favorite travel snapshots, too.

Get a New Rug

Laying down a new rug in the bedroom can “completely change the look of a room,” says Alex Yeske, the founder of Alex Yeske Interiors. When in doubt, it’s always best to go larger with rugs. A too-small rug will look awkward and out of place.

One way to bring major color and pattern to your bedroom? “Add a design element such as an accent wall with a textured wall covering behind the headboard,” suggests Ania Agárdy, the founder of Explore and Decor. “This will take your bedroom design to another level.” You can display a tapestry, a textile you picked up while traveling, or just something that spoke to you at the flea market!

8 Dreamy Bedroom Styles to Transform Your Space

For the longest time, I put my bedroom design plans to the side, since it’s a space that guests don’t really spend time in. But I can see now that creating a calm, serene bedroom is intimate and lovely—and I wish I hadn’t put it off. It’s been fun exploring different bedroom styles to see what fits. If you want to discover your own bedroom style, or you want to give your bedroom a whole new aesthetic, read on for all the inspo.

Cottagecore

If you find yourself daydreaming about running away to the countryside, the cottagecore aesthetic will be right up your alley. A cottagecore bedroom is cozy, simple, and inviting—think vintage furniture, lots of florals, wood, stone, and anything that reminds you of sunny, bucolic bliss. Keeping your color palette soft with pastels and warm neutrals will help set the tone for a calm and relaxing space. Nature-inspired accents like potted plants and flowers are also a must!

Coastal

Who doesn’t want to live close to the water? Luckily you can bring the beach vibes to you, no matter where you live. Minimalist

Neutrals reign supreme in a minimalist bedroom. Even if the rest of your home is filled with color and pattern, a minimalist bedroom might be exactly what you need when it comes to a good night’s rest. This bedroom style is easy on your nervous system—whites, creams, and taupes keep everything simple and relaxed. To keep a minimalist bedroom balanced, be sure you’re finding a variety of textures and contrast in your textiles. Embrace different hues of the simple, yet beautiful, neutral color palette as well.

Pro tip: To really embody the minimalist style, keep your phone out of the bedroom. A distraction-free bedroom will make falling asleep that much easier, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t kick your phone out sooner. 

Maximalist

Maximalism has been trending all year. This bedroom style is all about bold, eclectic decor, colors, and patterns. It’s highly individualized, and really about decorating with whatever brings you the most joy. Look for unique art, elaborate bedding, and interesting decor pieces to make your bedroom your own, personalized retreat. One specific maximalist trend I’ve been loving is pattern drenching, or adorning your room with a single pattern, top to bottom. This trend embraces a matchy-matchy vibe—why not have your wallpaper, drapes and bedding all go together? It’s a fun way to feel cocooned in your own personal style. 

Whimsical

If you love bright color palettes, decor that makes you smile, and pieces that are just plain fun—your aesthetic is whimsical. There’s a sense of playfulness to these spaces, making this a perfect bedroom style if you want your room to feel magical and inspiring. Don’t hesitate to buy quirky furniture (the strawberry side table I keep seeing on TikTok comes to mind!), hang fairy lights from the ceiling, or splurge on the canopy bed that makes you feel like a queen.  

Moody

Rich color palettes, atmospheric lighting, and a taste for sophistication are what moody bedrooms are made from. Deeper hues like black, navy, and burgundy are go-to’s for this bedroom style. While some might prefer a lighter, brighter color palette, others crave the cozy, intimate atmosphere a darker room creates. Japandi

Let’s begin with an ode to our senses. They’re amazing. At times (and when able), we can smell, taste, see, touch, and hear our way toward tranquility. A glimpse at an image, whiff of essential oil, or moment in a sound bath can relieve stress and transport us to a place of ease. The takeaway? When we treat our senses well, calm and relaxation is within our reach. This is so true in the context of interior design, particularly when it comes to the bedroom. By choosing calming bedroom colors, we can support our well-being and have better quality rest. Read on for some of most soothing—and beautiful—calming bedroom colors that ease the senses.

The Best Calming Bedroom Colors

The research speaks here. Over the last several decades, scientists have found cool colors pulled from nature—i.e., shades of blue and green and earthy grays—to evoke the greatest sense of ease. More recently, a British project dubbed The World’s Favourite Colour Project asked thousands of people across the world to link certain colors to how they made them feel. The prize for the most calming color was… blue. Specifically, navy blue. The color of the ocean and sky, blue is one of nature’s non-stimulating color that puts our mind and body at ease.

What are the most calming colors for sleep?

This is where it gets interesting. While blue reigns as the most calming hue of all, other shades that conjure images of sunsets and silvery lakes are also known to be excellent for inducing sleep. These include earthy greens, dusty soft yellows, light clay browns, soft oranges, and natural pinks. All of these calm colors are plucked from natural landscapes, which makes them ideal options for the bedroom. Green, especially, is known to diffuse anxiety and welcome harmony.

Which colors are not calming?

This can elicit a personal answer—and that’s because color is personal. How you respond to a hue is akin to how you may love or loathe a perfume or a film. With that said, shades of red are known to be stimulating and fiery, thus invoking alertness and proving to be a better color for the living room or kitchen. Still, it’s important to choose the bedroom colors that ease your senses. One person’s calm bedroom colors can differ from another’s.

If you’re not sure what hues to start with, look to these calming bedroom colors as inspiration.

Light Pinks, Yellows, and Oranges

Think of the California desert on a late August evening. It’s a tapestry of terra cotta earth that kisses the gold sunset. These calming colors bring exactly that into the bedroom.

Tip #1: Don’t Put It Down; Put It Away

I think of clutter simply as delayed action or decision-making. If you have a pile of clean laundry on a chair in your bedroom, it just means you haven’t yet folded it or put it away. If you have a massive stack of dust-covered books on the floor, it just means you forgot to put them back on the bookshelf in the living room. Start noticing when you walk into your home if you dump things on any available surface. Do you empty your bag or pockets? Do you toss and run? Awareness of your current habits is always the first step.

When you enter your bedroom today, pay attention. If you have something in your hands, think twice before you put it down. Practice putting every item you bring into your bedroom back in its designated home instead of dumping or dropping it on any convenient surface. This may sound like a stretch, but once you start getting the hang of this habit, it can feel like a moving meditation. Treating your belongings and your space with respect feels good, and waking up to a space that feels curated and cared for is dreamy.

Tip #2: Put Your Clothes Away

Want to know a secret from the inside? Most people don’t put their clothing away at the end of the day. Putting your clothes away takes about two minutes or less, and I promise it is well worth the effort. This little tidying effort each night will have a massive compound effect. Either you’ll be facing massive piles of clothing when you wake up, or you’ll have a clean and comforting space. Which would you prefer?

Tonight, when you get ready to go to bed, decide which clothes are dirty and which can be put away. I know that many of you have concocted a new category composed of “half-clean, half-dirty clothes” that you’re not sure what to do with. Warning: This kind of gray-area thinking will get you nowhere fast. If an item is clean enough for you to wear again, it’s clean. If it’s visibly dirty or soiled, let’s call it dirty! Deal?

Toss the dirty items into your laundry bin; hang or fold the ones that can be worn again and return them to your dresser or closet. If you have a watch or jewelry or other accessories, make sure to put them back in their designated homes. This seems fairly simple and obvious, but I promise that the payoff will be profound.

Tip #3: Relocate and Reset

Bedrooms do tend to be a magnet for clutter, and it’s not uncommon for bills or mail, magazines, coffee cups, and breakfast dishes to accumulate. Take a few minutes during your day, or before you turn in for bed, to relocate the random items and reset the space to its former glory. Remember the rules and guidelines you created and stick with them. What is your bedroom for? How do you want it to feel? I’m guessing dirty dishes and work papers don’t create the mood you’re going for.

Practice the five-minute relocate shuffle. Grab a bin, box, or basket and load it up with anything that landed in your bedroom and needs to see its way out. Take a few minutes to return bills and mail to your home “office,” dirty dishes to the kitchen sink, etc. This is like a quick reset for your bedroom, and a few minutes a day are all that’s required to prevent an avalanche and a weekend of cleaning and tidying. Do it for your future self!

Tip #4: Create Clear Boundaries for Other People’s Stuff

Do you have a partner or spouse, kids or furry friends, or an Italian lover who visits every third Thursday? If other people are frequently dumping stuff in your bedroom, it’s best to create clear and consistent guidelines and rules.

I know this is the part where you want me to tell you how to get other people to change. Believe me, as a control enthusiast myself, I would love nothing more than to provide you with that secret formula. But the truth is that other people generally do what they want . . . even if you ask politely. Even if you remind them. Even if you threaten them or pout or get mad.

The good news? You always get to decide how you want to think, feel, act, and react in any situation, so that’s what we will deal with here.

Create a plan for how you will handle it when other people leave stuff in your bedroom. Write down exactly how you want to react and what actions you want to take. It’s important to think this through from a calm place in advance. Make sure to communicate it in a clear, respectful, and nonthreatening way to the others in your life. Use “if/then” statements. For example, you could say to your kids, “If you leave your belongings in my bedroom, then I will always put them in a pile on your bed because they don’t belong in my space.” Make sure whatever you decide feels good to you and is fueled by a positive emotion—i.e., “I’m excited to create a space that feels good” as opposed to “Anyone who touches my masterpiece is going DOWN!”

5 Things to Banish From the Bedroom

  • Excess Furniture: The bed already takes up most of your prime real estate. If you have random side tables, end tables, stools, or benches, considering relocating them or donating them. Give your bedroom room to breathe, unless you have a huge bedroom and have created some type of suite.
  • Luggage: Unpack immediately when you come home from a trip. Put your things away and then put away your suitcase (in its designated home, of course). Please.
  • Dirty Dishes: One question. Why? Slow down and take a minute to bring your dirty dishes and neglected coffee mugs back to the kitchen. You can earn bonus points by immediately washing them and putting them away.
  • Trash: I’m saying it because it’s more common than you might think. Trash should go in the trash. Not on your nightstand, not under your bed, not on top of your dresser. Not on your bedroom floor! I think we’re on the same page here. Throw your trash away. Do it now. Like, right now.
  • Technology: Ultimately, no matter what else you decide to do, your bedroom needs to be a place where you can rest. Going to bed with a buzz of computers or phones does not a good night’s sleep make. Relocate your computers, phones, tablets, and anything else that prevents you from going to bed and staying asleep.

“Wallpaper has been guilty of little white lies.” When I read these words by Jude Philips, I thought, perfect. The designer captures the enigmatic, alluring, and deceptive quality of this historical décor staple. Wallpaper intrigues. It expands a room beyond its size and scope. It swells a space’s potential to envelop you in a mood that transcends time and place. And for the room where we dream, wallpaper transports to a realm of reverie, as these bedroom wallpaper ideas illustrate. 

Some of the earliest wallpaper designs celebrated ancestral scenes, religious images, and escapist vibes of tropical paradises. People loved wallpaper for its ability to conceal imperfections and imbue instant color. The same goes for today. Wallpaper varieties cover every aesthetic.

Kelli Menendez, the designer and founder of the hand-drawn wallpaper collection Half Full, believes wallpaper to be a means of positivity. “When people look at our patterns, they should feel lush and luxurious but also delight and joy,” says Menendez, who believes botanical and earthy patterns are a way to honor nature. “It is important to remind ourselves that everything we use and touch comes from the world around us and nature is that in the truest form.”

I checked in with Menendez, as well as with designers Bethany Adams of Bethany Adams Interiors, Erin Coren of Curated Nest, and Jessica Nelson of Etch Design Group to see how we can feel “lush and luxurious” in our bedrooms.

Given that there are endless options and types of wallpaper, I asked these experts for their take on the best bedroom wallpaper ideas. Let their following insight transport.

What wallpaper is best for the bedroom?

There is a sea of patterns, colors, textures, and finishes. This all begs the question: Which are the best wallpaper options for the bedroom? Menendez implores us to go with our aesthetic guts. Think about what you want your bedroom to feel like and consider what you want to wake up to, she suggests.

In her collection, Menendez says NorCalHolly, and Franz are some of the most popular picks for the bedroom—all of which boast an ethereal, natural vibe. As she adds, “nature is always nice to see and can feel neutral.” But when in doubt, opt for something in neutral tones and patterns, Menendez suggests. From there, “add bits of color where it feels natural.”

Craving a little more punch? Adams’ love of chinoiserie prints for the bedroom might be the ticket. “It makes a bedroom feel special,” she adds. “I also love a simple graphic print for spaces that warrant a little more pep, like a kids’ room or a more modern primary bedroom.”

Should you wallpaper the entire bedroom or just an accent wall?

Both work well, say the experts. Adams is usually against feature walls, but she believes highlighting just one bedroom wall with a print makes sense in this room. “You could choose an exciting pattern and just put it behind the headboard. That way you enjoy it when you’re out of bed, but at night when you’re reading in bed or drifting off to sleep, the pattern is behind you so it’s totally invisible and you can focus on your other three walls.”

Menendez has gone both ways, but she says if you’re considering covering every wall, it’s worth it. “There is something so beautiful and complete about a room with continuous pattern throughout,” she tells us. “It makes the room feel larger and makes the paper more of a textural element no matter how strong the pattern.”

15 Bedroom Wallpaper Ideas That Elevate

Idea #1: Incorporate layers

Mix in accessories over your patterns. “Hang a mirror or your favorite artwork piece over a patterned wall to make it more dimensional,” suggests Menendez.

Idea # 2: Lean into nature

Choose prints with a botanical, landscape, or animal theme. Bringing nature into the bedroom can offer a soothing look and feel, says Menendez.

Idea # 3: Mix simple with eclectic

“I mentioned loving a chinoiserie wallpaper in a bedroom, but this really only works if you have a simple room with lots of wall space,” says Adams. Keep furniture and accessories simple to allow a bold print to shine.

Idea # 4: Choose a complementary headboard

If the back of your bed is patterned, this might compete with your wallpaper, warns Adams. To avoid this, choose a headboard in the same color as one found in the wallpaper print.

Idea # 5: Frame a square

If you love a wallpaper print but don’t want to commit an entire room to it, frame a portion of it to hang. It’s instant artwork without any major commitment.

Idea # 6: Match print size to room size

“I try to scale the print to the size of the room,” says Adams. Go for smaller prints for smaller rooms, and larger prints for larger rooms. “This will keep the pattern from overwhelming the space.”

Idea # 7: Look to neutrals

Prints in creams, beiges, and grays can make a huge impact. As Adams says, “even a busy print can be subdued by choosing a neutral or pale colorway.”

Idea # 8: Listen to the animals

Birds on the wall? This may be the key to creating a look that is relaxing and poetic.

Idea # 9: Consider an accent wall

As mentioned, wallpapering an entire bedroom or just one both get designers’ approval. But if you’re hesitant to commit, Coren says go for the latter. “We feel that the way to make a bedroom stand out is to have one unexpected item that gives a pop of interest—and that can be done with adding a focal wall of wallpaper,” she says.

Idea # 10: Go bold

Nelson believes that even after furniture and accessories, a bedroom can feel incomplete. To add life to an otherwise simple space, choose wallpaper with bright colors.

Idea # 11: Celebrate black and white

When these two merge, there’s always a huge impact. Especially when it comes to a bold, graphic, show-stopping black-and-white wallpaper.

Idea # 12: Honor the lines

Horizontal, vertical, even diagonal. Lined wallpaper brings the eye up or around, which stretches the appearance of a room. More stripes = more visual space.

Idea # 13: Create a canvas

If you live in a rental apartment, don’t despair, says Menendez. Instead of wallpapering the walls you soon may part from, you can add it to a large canvas “for a removable artwork feel.”

Idea # 14: Marry prints

Sometimes the best matches are those that don’t match at all. Don’t be afraid: Mix graphic with ethereal. Stripes with botanicals. Even traditional with historical. It’s all your oyster, and the options are the sea.

I’ve long thought of the guest bedroom as an invitation to the home—somewhere you can welcome guests in with warmth and kindness. And as I’ve sought out guest bedroom ideas for styling the space, I’ve wanted the final result to support that ethos. That line of thought led me back to a famous Maya Angelou quote: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I aim to live by the prolific writer’s words—and that includes how I conceive of my home.

Actions that land on the heart are lasting. From a smile on the subway to remembering a birthday—there are plenty of ways to make an impact in others’ lives. And when it comes to our homes, simply opening them is the greatest start. From there, we can create a place for someone to feel so cozy and loved—and these guest bedroom ideas do just that.

Before we get started, it’s worth noting the obstacle. Guest bedrooms, if we are lucky to have one, tend to be on the smaller side. (The same goes for a couch or nook for a guest.) But where space lacks, interior design creativity reigns. I tapped the insight of three interior designers, Jennifer Walter, Owner and Principal Designer of Folding Chair Design Co.; Amy Youngblood of Amy Youngblood Interiors; and Susan Spath, Principal Designer of Susan Spath Interior Design and president of Kern & Company, for their insight. With each of their guest bedroom ideas, these designers prove how fun it can be to design this room—and how lasting of an impression it can make on how your guests feel.

1: Treat the Guest Bedroom as if It Were Your Own Room

Just because it’s a “spare” room of sorts doesn’t mean it gets the spare treatment. Think of your room, then think of your favorite hotel, and merge the two. Splurge on plush pillows and extra blankets. And luxe bedding is always key, believes Jennifer Walter. “We always order with comfort in mind,” she says. 

#2: Prioritize the Bed

“I feel that a guest room should really be about a comfortable sleeping space for your guests,” says Amy Youngblood, who puts the emphasis on the bed. If a king fits, go for it. They’ll always remember the sleep they had at your place. Susan Spath loves including a built-in headboard that extends behind small end tables, “which can make the room very tactile and add a cozy feel.”

#3: Stock the Essentials

How many times have you forgotten to pack your toothpaste? Keep a bag of common toiletries on the bedstand, from cotton balls to mouthwash, to accommodate for anything your guests may be missing. This says, I got you and it rids any awkward moments of them having to ask for another tube of toothpaste, again.

#4: Provide the Creature Comforts

In addition to forgotten toiletries, Walter loves to include a basket with extra washcloths and slippers. “This is so the first guest can slip them on and use them during their stay,” she says. “Most people forget to pack slippers, but tile and wood floors can get chilly. Even when hanging in other rooms, it’s nice to slip on something else while visiting.” Spath says to go even further by providing guests with plush bathrobes and a favorite book on the nightstand.

#5: Keep It Light

“I typically opt for a more neutral, lighter palette,” says Youngblood. Think cooler light blues, creamy whites, and warm beiges. Generally, lighter tones appeal to more people, she says, “and it also gives the sense of more space” if the room is on the smaller side.

#6: Be Mindful of Space 

If you dedicate most of the room to the bed, be wary of the size of other pieces of furniture. Walter says to go smaller on the nightstands. “As a guest, you’re usually not storing so much in the side tables,” she says. “We’ll often do a side table on one side and a small round ottoman on the other. That way, the ottoman serves as both a drop spot and a seat if space is tight.” Spath agrees, adding that hanging lights over nightstands is a great way to avoid taking up the entire space for a lamp. And Youngblood says to consider a taller nightstand because it has a smaller footprint.

#7: Make It Soothing 

There’s something about a magical scent that stays with you, even long after your visit. Walter and Spath say to incorporate candles into the guest bedroom, ideally something soothing, and an indulgent body lotion.  What’s better than candles? A fresh bouquet.

Making the best bedroom design tips a reality starts with a dream—well, a daydream specifically. I fantasize about living in Paris. Make that: I daydream about my apartment in Paris. It’s in the 6th arrondissement. Natural light spills onto the patinaed wood floors. The kitchen is a smashing of marble and Greek tile and copper pots. To the left is a living room with enough space for soirées. And my primary bedroom? Colossal. Expansive. So endless in space that there’s a clawfoot tub in the middle. I conjure my French bedroom daily for bedroom design tips and décor inspiration. In my mind, it’s that perfect. A haven where sleep, space, and aesthetics collide.  

When I think more intently about my dream Parisian bedroom, I lean into the feeling it evokes rather than its size. My ideal bedroom is ethereal and exudes a sense of peace. In reality, my bedroom is quite small, as many urban apartment rooms are. But there’s still opportunity for me to create the feel of my dream space. Because when it comes to designing a primary bedroom that may be limited in real estate, the key is to focus on the essentials.

As designer Katie Raffetto tells me, “less is more” is the standard for making a smaller bedroom feel bigger. So read on to glean Raffetto’s bedroom design tips, and that of Cameron Johnson, for making a small primary bedroom seem expansive and indulgent—like that of my imaginary Parisian flat. (Clawfoot tub excluded.)

#1: Go with the Essentials

Look around your bedroom: Does every item have a role? If not, it’s time to purge. This rule of thumb runs true for all bedrooms, but most essentially for those with limited space. “I often see people trying to get too much out of a small space,” says Raffetto. “If it’s a bedroom just let it be a bedroom with a bed, nightstands, and lamps.” Using less furniture will help to avoid a cramped, cluttered feel. 

#2: Rethink Furniture Size

A queen-size bed may seem ideal, but it may make your bedroom walls feel like they’re closing in on you, believes designer Cameron Johnson, founder and CEO of design firm and furniture rental service Nickson Living. Instead, opt for a smaller size to allow for breathing room and another critical piece of furniture. Johnson calls this “space engineering,” creating “room for a chest of drawers versus a dresser, which can then make room for a small desk, and so on and so forth.”

#3: Opt for Dramatic Colors

“In a small space, I like to use saturated colors and dark colors,” says Raffetto. These hues help you to “lean into the coziness,” she says and indulge in the purpose of the room: to rest and recharge.

#4: Utilize “Air Space”

One of the top ways designers make any room seem bigger? Capitalizing on vertical space. Johnson suggests adding artwork above the bed “to extend the headboard” or consider a lofted bed, which allows for a desk or storage underneath. When the eye is drawn upward the mind gets a sense of more expansion.

#5: Select Pieces That Serve Dual Functions

Sometimes, limited square footage doesn’t allow for multiple pieces of furniture—and that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it’s a way to get creative and let a beloved piece do more of the leg work. Raffetto says to place your dresser next to your bed, that way it doubles as a nightstand. Johnson, who is also a fan of making pieces multi-purpose, loves a bed frame with integrated storage.

#6: Be Smart with Lighting

Don’t let your lamps overpower your furniture, implores Raffetto. A proclivity to incorporate lamps or light fixtures that are too big will take up too much room and create a cluttered feel. Streamlined lamps and sconces work well in small bedrooms, she adds, and “give your table some breathing room.”

#7: Think in Terms of Completeness

Anything great—a room, a recipe, a book—has a sense of abundance to it. That doesn’t necessarily come from quantity alone, but more so the consideration of all its parts. This is the overarching theme of making a small primary bedroom feel larger. Choose substantial accents that lend a “finished feel” to the room, advises Johnson. These include floor length mirrors, curtains, area rugs, and benches. “All of these pieces add a decorative flair to the space and make it feel finished and larger given that the eye will pick up on the completeness,” Johnson adds.

The bedroom is in. I know, you’re probably thinking: Was it ever out? It wasn’t. This hardworking room has always been in the spotlight, hosting some of the best things that happen in life. But this year, the bedroom seems to be getting an upswell of design attention. At least, that’s my take from what the interior designers are forecasting for the top bedroom décor trends of 2022. 

It’s all about “immersing” yourself with meaningful inspiration, Regan Baker says.

“I see bedrooms moving in the direction of the sanctuary,” Julie Rootes shares.

And… there’s a big shift toward “luxury and well-crafted,” believes Elle Cole. 

In many ways, this inclination toward an intentional and beautiful bedroom is as much a wellness manifesto as it is an aesthetic one. After all, this is the room where we take care of ourselves and recharge at night. It’s also where we set the tone for our days. So, it deserves to be decorated per these positive (and sexy) sentiments. My manifesto: We deserve for our bedrooms to be decorated like this.

Plus, when we’re fortunate to have a space to rest our bodies and minds, it warrants granting this room extra attention to make it the most enjoyable it can be. So here are seven of the top bedroom décor trends of 2022, according to six design experts. Let their insight guide you to create the sexiest, dreamiest, most joyful bedroom ever.

Because that is always in.

Trend #1: Airy and Soothing

“I see bedrooms moving in the direction of the sanctuary,” Julie Rootes tells me. “With all of the chaos happening in the world around us, the bedroom has become a safe haven, a place where we can turn off all the noise in the world and recharge our batteries.” Rootes, who is the owner and principal behind Julie Rootes Interiors, foresees the “sanctuary” bedroom as being one that is light, airy, and soothing. “This gives you a calming feeling for the mind and body,” she says.

Get the Look:

It may seem obvious: a bedroom is meant to be soothing and to encourage repose. But a few additional tricks can bring the relaxation quota to the sanctuary level. Incorporate hues of light greens, blues, creamy whites, and ample earthy beiges. Remove any unnecessary electronics (including that TV!) and incorporate a place to relax before hitting the bed, such as a cozy wool chaise or reading chair. 

Trend #2: Pure Fabrics

Environmental concerns are top of mind these days, says Julie Rootes. In this vein, there’s a natural proclivity for incorporating pure fabrics in 2022. “Selecting all-natural bedding made of natural and organic materials is gaining popularity,” Rootes continues, pointing toward wool, linen, and organic cotton as the material stars of the bedroom this year.

Get the Look:

We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. That fact calls for sheets and duvets that are pure and free from harsh chemicals and synthetics. Opt for linens made of a single natural material, such as organic cotton or ultra-breathable, heirloom-quality linen.

Trend #3: Statement Headboards

When it comes to bedroom décor trends of 2022, a headboard isn’t just a headboard. It is a full-on design focal point, say the experts. “We are tired of the standard headboard,” exclaims Regan Baker of Regan Baker Design. “We want more personalized statements and shapes that represent our overall style.” Baker includes this to be elaborately shaped “statement headboards” as well as “avant-garde headboard designs.” Elle Cole agrees. “Upholstered headboards add depth and comfort,” says Cole. “It’s the layering of softness that invites you to calm your mind when you wind down for the day.”

Get the Look:

Tufted. Uniquely shaped. Upholstered. The key to this look is finding a headboard that immediately draws the eye and offers inspiration upon walking into the room.

Trend #4: Layers and Layers

More sometimes is more—at least, in the bedroom. This comes into play when layering various soft, easy textures. “Layering a bedroom with softness and quality can elevate our emotional well-being and increase our positive energy,” says Elle Cole, who believes this approach adds a feeling of reprieve. Layers also up the sanctuary feeling of the bed, which is critical for our health, adds the founder and principal of Elle Cole Interiors: “A bedroom deficient in comfort and peace can lead to a myriad of health issues.”

Get the Look:

The simplest way to add layered depth to a bedroom is starting with the star feature: the bed. Toss an ultra-plush throw (or a weighted blanket, if you’re inclined) atop your comforter. From there you can weave in simple throw pillows for added dimension.

Trend #5: Dimensional Color

Speaking of layers. The experts are also seeing an inclination toward more dimension and depth through accessorized color. Think interesting art pieces, varied lighting, and throw pillows in jewel tones.

Get the Look:

Trisha Snyder of Butler Armsden Architects is seeing this “dimensional” look via layered lighting and colorful dimensional art pieces. Paul Rochford and Michael Violante, the principals behind V&R Interiors, say their clients are yearning for color pops found in accessories, like lamps and pillows, which add layers of depth and dimensions. “This creates a warm and lush feel to the room,” says Rochford.

Trend #6: Lots (and Lots!) of Nature

That instant ease you get from a walk in the woods? Bring that to the bedroom, says Paul Rochford and Michael Violante. Incorporating nature is more important to us than ever this year. “We need our bedrooms to be an oasis of calm, zen, beauty, and relaxation—and nature really helps us achieve this quickly,” believes Violante.

Get the Look:

It’s easy to weave bits of air, sky, and green into the bedroom, according to the V&R Interiors design duo. One way is to capitalize on a view. Violante recommends using sheer or transparent window coverings to allow ample views and natural light to shine through a window. This, he says, lets “nature be the star.” It’s also a way to trick the eye into thinking a window is larger than it is. Of course, another simple and steadfast way is to include a gorgeous indoor plant in a stunning planter.

Trend #7: Quality and Luxurious Pieces

It’s a décor trend on the outs for 2022: fast furniture. Mass-produced and trendy is losing its appeal, say many designers. In its stead is a desire for quality, luxurious, and meaningful pieces, from bespoke dressers to vintage beds to high-end bedding. “Clients are leaning toward quality over quantity,” says Elle Cole. “Well-crafted furnishings that have longevity are sought after because many invested in luxury during the pandemic and now they’re unwilling to compromise when it comes to quality.”

Get the Look:

A well-crafted item for the bedroom can vary in aesthetic and price. Look for furniture items that are made of solid wood or metal and veer from plastics or mixed materials. Also, source your local vintage or antique shop for well-made vintage finds at (often) easier price points.
