Let the sunshine in.

Bright white living room

I will never forget the year my husband and I lived in a home with minimal natural light. We were in a temporary living situation and the home was situated amidst trees that blocked the sun. The main living areas were almost always cast in shadows, and we always had to be careful of ice as we left the house in the winter. No sun on the front door meant the ice took longer to melt—so we gingerly walked around frozen patches of concrete well into March. As the year progressed, I questioned why my mood was down more than usual. The darkness had taken its toll on my mental health. As we eventually searched for new apartments, natural light was the first priority.

I thank my lucky stars every day that I now live in a home drenched in sunlight. Our homes should make us happy, and sunshine is known for boosting serotonin and lifting moods. There’s no better feeling than walking into a room with sunlight streaming through the windows, casting soft shadows and illuminating cozy corners. There’s a reason our beloved pets find the small patches of light to curl up under!

Whether you live in a sun-soaked home or are looking for ways to brighten up a dim space, bringing in light can transform your space. From sheer curtains to soft palettes and an abundance of plants, here’s how to style light-filled interiors.

image above from our interview with Jessie De Lowe, by Michelle Nash

Install Sheer Curtains

A room without curtains can feel unfinished, like something is missing. A window with curtains makes a space look more polished, intentional, and cohesive. And of course, curtains dictate how natural light enters a room. Think of curtains as the final layer that ties everything together, like accessories for an outfit. In short: light-filled interiors need curtains.

If you want to let sunshine into your space instead of shielding it, sheer curtains filter the light softly. Light linen or gauzy cotton panels will create an airy, ethereal feel and the texture will help soften hard surfaces like wood floors and furniture. The right curtains can transform a room from stark and sterile to warm and inviting in an instant.

Embrace a Soft, Neutral Color Palette

Light-filled interiors shine even brighter with colors that reflect and enhance natural light. While darker colors absorb the light instead of reflecting it, warm neutrals will make a space feel open and inviting—even as the sun moves throughout the day. Sunlit rooms will naturally feel calm, but colors like cream, taupe, and beige will just enhance those feel-good feelings.

Color also doesn’t have to be entirely off the table—muted pastels like blush, sage, or light blue will work well while keeping the palette soft.

Decorate with Plants

One of my prized possessions is a fiddle leaf fig I’ve had since 2019. She brings so much beauty to my sunny home office. Fiddle leaf figs are notoriously temperamental, so I’m especially proud of how much she’s grown over the years. They love the sun, and make a perfect addition to a well-lit room.

Light-filled interiors practically beg for plants. Plants breathe life into a space, add a pop of color, and even improve air quality. A room doesn’t feel complete without a little bit of greenery, especially one with great light. Just be sure that the plants you add to your room will love direct sunlight and not be overwhelmed by it. You can also be strategic on where you place them, if your plants prefer more indirect light.

Statement plants like fiddle leaf figs and olive trees look beautiful in living room corners, and they both love lots of light. Pothos and snake plants are heartier and are great for plant beginners. Planters are also an opportunity to add color and texture to your space—so pick ones that you find beautiful and compliment your space (and the plant!).

Choose Light, Natural Materials

I dream of having a sunroom one day. I would fill it with light wood furniture, a warm white comfy chair, and a woven coffee table—much like Camille’s gorgeous sitting area in her bedroom. Natural materials and soft textures are perfect for light-filled interiors.

Texture is everything, especially in a room full of neutrals, so opt for organic materials like linen or cotton and pair them with woven accents like wicker, rattan, or jute. These materials lean into the calm, serene ambience a well-lit room naturally brings. Bulky furniture will feel heavy in an otherwise light and fresh feeling space—lighter wood and woven accents are best.

Keep Decor Intentional and Minimal

Entering a room filled with decor and tchotchkes can feel overstuffed and cluttered. There’s no need to pack a sunlit room with decor—let nature do the talking. A room with natural light will automatically make a room feel open and airy. Stick to a few high quality pieces of decor that bring you joy and keep clutter to a minimum. A stylish coffee table book, a candle, framed photos of loved ones or a vase of flowers are perfect. Your plants also count as decor!

Use Mirrors Strategically

Styling mantles can be a fun design challenge, and my favorite way to style them is with a large mirror. Mirrors on a mantle not only make a beautiful focal point, but they can also double the amount of light in a room by reflecting sunlight. This will make your space feel even larger than it is, as well as brighter. A win-win! Place a mirror opposite or adjacent to a window for optimal brightness.

If your space doesn’t have a mantle, or a spot for a large mirror—any reflective surface will help bounce the light. Opt for mirrored trays, or an acrylic coffee table to keep the space feeling bright and balanced.

A sun-drenched home isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about creating a space that feels light and fresh. By incorporating sheer textures, soft palettes, greenery, and natural materials, you can transform your light-filled interiors into bright and welcoming retreats. So go ahead and let the light in!

Calm, cozy, and perfectly imperfect.

There’s no better feeling than the rush of calm that comes when you step into a warm and inviting room. Good design is not only about how a space looks, but about how it feels as well. A space can be technically beautiful without any personal touches, but entering that space may feel like walking on egg shells. Embracing imperfection and natural beauty is the antidote to a world obsessed with perfection. Enter the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi.

Wabi-sabi is about finding the beauty in imperfection. Rooted in simplicity, authenticity, and the beauty of impermanence, wabi-sabi design transforms spaces into serene, lived-in sanctuaries. Key characteristics of this design style include neutral color palettes, natural elements like plants, wood and stone, and intentionally organized spaces with personalized decor. Every item in a wabi-sabi home has its place and a purpose.

If you’re looking to create a home that feels effortlessly calm and deeply personal, these wabi-sabi decor ideas for your bedroom, living room, and bathroom will inspire you to cozy up and embrace the art of imperfection.

The Bedroom

If there’s one room in your home that deserves a sense of calm, it’s the bedroom. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary—uncluttered and designed to promote rest. Take a moment to scan your space and identify areas where clutter tends to accumulate. For me, my nightstand and dresser often become catchalls for miscellaneous items. A simple declutter can make a world of difference. Remember, wabi-sabi is about embracing simplicity and imperfection. In the bedroom, this means incorporating organic textures, a muted color palette, and simple, meaningful decor.

How to Incorporate Wabi-Sabi in Your Bedroom:

 • Opt for Natural Bedding – Linen, cotton, and other organic fabrics create an inviting, imperfectly textured bedscape. Investing in bamboo sheets is also one of the best things I’ve done for my sleep in years. They get softer with each wash, and make slipping into bed even more wonderful than usual.
 • Celebrate the Handmade – Choose handcrafted ceramics, raw wood furniture, and woven accents for your bedroom. These natural textures are beautiful, and will help create an ambience of peace and calm.
 • Keep It Minimal – A clutter-free space with only essential decor and meaningful objects fosters tranquility. Keep your bolder design and decor choices for spaces with more activity, like the living room.
 • Use Soft, Earthy Hues – Stick to warm neutrals, soft blues, and muted greens to evoke a sense of calm.

The Living Room

A wabi-sabi living room is welcoming and relaxed. This is where you gather; let the space be a reflection of you and your family. You want your living room to ooze warmth and coziness, so invest in comfortable furniture that loved ones won’t be afraid to prop their feet on. Incorporate personalized decor like framed photos of family and friends, and be sure the room has plenty of natural materials. A neutral color palette, along with layered textures and plants, will create a sense of ease—perfect for morning chats over coffee, movie nights, and after-school hangs.

How to Incorporate Wabi-Sabi in Your Living Room:

 • Layer Textures – Texture is everything, especially when your color palette is full of neutrals. Wabi-sabi decor can include items like linen or boucle cushions, wool throws, raw wood, and woven furniture. Layering these textures will create warmth and dimension in your space—encouraging loved ones to relax.
 • Choose Soft Lighting – Standing and table lamps are perfect for your living room. Avoid a big overhead light and instead, dot your living room with smaller sources of light. Woven lamp shades are a wabi-sabi plus!
 • Prioritize Open Space – A wabi-sabi home embraces simplicity, so aim for a clean and decluttered layout. Choose furniture that allows for open movement and breathing room, avoiding overcrowding with excessive decor.
 • Incorporate Nature – If your living room has natural light, a large plant would make a beautiful anchor in your space. Plants add so much life to a room, as well as a pop of color. You could also add a vase of flowers or branches, or even a sculptural piece of driftwood. All of these bring the beauty of the outdoors in.

The Bathroom

One design trend that continues to be popular are spa-inspired bathrooms. This aligns perfectly with wabi-sabi design. Who doesn’t want a bathroom that feels like a calm escape? Natural stone, handcrafted elements, and a soothing color palette set the tone for a spa-like retreat. You can really play with texture in a bathroom, and even though wabi-sabi design embraces neutrals, this could be a great space to play with a little bit of color.

How to Incorporate Wabi-Sabi in Your Bathroom:

 • Use Organic Materials – The world is your oyster when it comes to stone, tile, wood, and clay. All of these materials will bring warmth and texture to your bathroom, not to mention natural beauty.
 • Simplify Your Decor – Instead of cluttered counters, opt for a few well-chosen, beautiful objects. I would consider anything left out as wabi-sabi decor, so be mindful when purchasing items like soap dishes and tooth brush holders. They get to be beautiful too!
 • Add a Sense of Ritual – A wooden stool next to the bathtub, a linen robe, or a ceramic incense holder elevates everyday routines. Remember, wabi-sabi embraces simplicity, and it goes beyond aesthetics. It should inspire intentional living, and the bathroom is a wonderful place to practice that. Give yourself permission to romanticize your skincare routine!

In most homes, the living room is home base for all things cozy, comfy, and welcoming. Whether you’re curled up with a good book, enjoying a movie with family, or gathering with friends for a glass of wine, the living room is the perfect place to express your personal interior design style. But sometimes it’s good to mix things up and when that time comes, we’re often searching for inspiration and guidance. Which is why, with the turning of the new year, we’ve tapped designers to share some of the most popular living room decor ideas for 2025.

Whether you’re looking to make a few little tweaks here and there or want to revamp the whole thing, our experts Jenna Morrow of Morrow Design Studios, Theresa Butler of Theresa Butler Interiors, Lauren Lerner of Living with Lolo and Tina Guevara of Juliette Sebastian Interiors shared the living room decor ideas they’re excited to see come to fruition in 2025. If you’re ready to transform your living room and refresh your space in the new year—read on.

The Best Living Room Decor Ideas for 2025

2025 continues to be a year of bold design trends. We’re staying both fearless (moody hues, rich color palettes and curated maximalism) and soft at the same time (earth tones, curves, calm spaces). Interior trends move a bit slower than fashion trends, since we’re not completely re-styling our homes every year. 2025 is an extension of last year—we’re collectively craving highly personalized, peaceful spaces. Especially living rooms.

So why make a change? Think of your living room as a sanctuary for comfort and inspiration. It’s a place where the best ideas make their appearance in a less-intimate environment than the bedroom. Living room decor speaks to stylistic choices made from a place of comfort that simultaneously reflects the energy you want to wake up to each morning. With this in mind, we love incorporating new trends into your lived-in space without completely overhauling the vibe.

The idea of re-vamping a frequented space is always appealing, yet our designers note that incorporating the living room decor ideas for 2025 can be done with a few subtle shifts. However you’re looking to switch up your space in the year to come, there’s bound to be a trend for you.

Color Drenching

Last year, deep, bold hues re-entered the interior world in a big way. The moodiness isn’t going anywhere in 2025. One way to make a large impact in your living room is to try color drenching—another big trend for the year.

“Don’t be afraid to play with bold but muted colors in a room’s entirety by color drenching it,” Morrow says. “Commit to painting the walls, trim, and ceiling in one color to add dramatic flair to the space.” Not sure what color to start with? If you’d like to go dark, Morrow suggests navy. “This is a shade that’s bold but sophisticated,” she says.

Statement Stoneware

Maximalist style continues to be popular this year, and if you’d like to ease in with a statement piece for your living room, Guevara suggests looking at stoneware. “Natural stone with bold veining—travertine, marble, and onyx—is taking center stage in coffee tables, fireplaces, and decor,” she shares.

While it’s perhaps easier to think of stone in kitchens and bathrooms, don’t underestimate it as an excellent focal point in your living room. Guevara suggests pairing stone with soft textures like wool or boucle to keep it from feeling too cold.

Curved Furniture and Decor

Have you heard? Hard edges are out. Curves are being fully embraced and incorporating soft edges into your living room will make it all the more cozy. Morrow suggests curved furniture for your living room, like a sofa or chair. “These pieces will create a welcoming and cozy space that’s easy to flow through—whether it’s just you at home or you and your closest friends,” she shares.

Not in the market for new furniture? Morrow suggests curved decor too. “You can also add decorative pieces that are curved such as curved statement lighting, oval accent trays on the coffee table, and round accent pillows,” she continues.

Healdsburg Small Wicker Swivel Chair

These woven rattan lounge chairs elevate any living space with sophisticated architectural lines and earthy handwoven texture. A swivel base and creamy cushions make them comfortable for lounging—and we love them as a pair.

Penn Ottoman

A cushy, inviting spot for your lazy Sundays, this ottoman will subtly soften your living room.

Hand-Crafted, Artisanal Furniture

If you’re on the hunt for new living room furniture this year, be on the lookout for hand-crafted, artisanal pieces that will last a long time. “Cheap, mass-produced furniture is on the decline as sustainability and high-quality craftsmanship take center stage,” Butler says. “I think people are seeing the value in investing in quality pieces that can be passed down from generation to generation. People are looking to get more from their furniture.”

Morrow agrees. “Hand-crafted furniture will add uniqueness to your space as hand-crafted pieces vary,” she says. “One coffee table style made by the same artisan will contain slightly different appearances due to being hand-crafted.”

Biophilic Design

If your living room doesn’t have any plants, this is the year to add some greenery to your space. Guevara suggests bringing the outside in to create a peaceful, happy living room. “The biophilic movement is becoming a big focus in 2025, as it shows how connecting with nature at home can improve your mental health and lower your stress,” she says. “Studies show that being around greenery reduces stress, boosts your productivity, and improves your mood.”

Even if real plants aren’t your thing, or perhaps your living room doesn’t have much natural light, faux plants will work as well. Even adding green drapes or accent pillows to your sofa can create more calm in your space.

Flory Wallpaper

Wallpaper

“Wallpaper is experiencing a resurgence, bringing fresh excitement to the design world—and it’s already here,” Butler exclaims. As someone who wallpapered her office for her birthday last year, I can attest to this. Wallpaper in your living room would make a huge impact on your space.

“Today’s wallpaper comes in a variety of colors, textures, and patterns, and it’s being used not just on vertical walls, but even on ceilings,” Butler continues. “Its revival unlocks endless opportunities for incorporating texture, color, and pattern into spaces, encouraging more creative and bold design choices.”

camille styles living room bookshelf

Earth Tones

Switching up your living room color palette is a great way to revamp your living room, whether your budget is big or small. Not sure what colors to look for? In 2025, warm neutrals and earth tones are a great place to start. “Earthy color palettes will reign in 2025,” Guevara says. “Colors like terracotta, muted greens, beige, caramel, and even brown will appear in fabrics, rugs, and decorative pieces.”

One way to add earth tones to your living room is to use natural elements like wood, stone or woven materials in both your furniture and decor. Natural materials look beautiful against neutral color palettes, especially when there is a pop of green from a plant nearby.

Textura Side Table

Inspired by the rich craft traditions of Mexico, this handwoven and handcrafted side table brings striking design and high-texture to an entryway, living room, or bedside table. The clean-lined beechwood frame, expertly wrapped with natural seagrass rope, blends modern design with artisanal excellence.

Textura Bench

This handcrafted bench brings striking design to your living room coffee table. Stack a few books and a vase—giving this beautiful bench room to shine.

Highly Personalized Space

The one trend that is holding strong in 2025 is highly personalized spaces. That is—tossing trends to the side and embracing the colors and textures you love. “Living rooms are becoming injected with more character, moving away from solely light and bright interiors by introducing darker, more dramatic tones that captivate and feel more intimate,” Lerner says.

So if you love stripes, deep purple, or that cool art you found at the flea market—add it to your home. Unique furniture? Lerner says go for it. “For furniture, unconventional designs and curves that offer both aesthetic appeal and comfort are being embraced as people increasingly opt for bolder choices that can serve as a unique form of art.”

My ideal December reset day includes dreaming up home projects for the new year. All of this scheming goes hand in hand with design trend predictions, naturally. As someone who writes about interiors, I love chatting with designers during this time of year to get their take on what’s to come. According to them, we’re moving full steam ahead toward comfort, wellness, and personalized spaces at home, and I for one, am here for it.

Ahead, see what 2025 design trends the pros are predicting will be big in the year ahead. From elevated textures, creamy neutrals, and bold color palettes, there’s truly something for everyone in 2025.

Warm Minimalism

Since brown has been having a moment all year, it came as no surprise when Pantone announced 2025’s color of the year, Mocha Mousse. Creamy neutrals like Mocha Mousse create inviting, beautiful, luxe spaces and Stephanie Wiott of Stephanie Wiott Designs is predicting warm color palettes paired with minimalism will be everywhere next year. “Minimalism in 2025 isn’t about stripping everything down to the bare essentials. It’s about embracing simplicity with warmth and texture,” she shares. “We’re leaning into creamy beiges, terracotta accents, and organic materials like raw wood and stone.”

Does this trend sound vaguely familiar? Camille has embraced warm minimalism for years. Her home embodies warmth and coziness, and her spaces ooze comfort without chaos. Consider decluttering your space and adding natural materials and textures to your home in 2025 if warm minimalism sounds alluring.

Wellness Spaces

An at-home spa? Yes, please! Many 2025 design trends are focused on self-care and well-being—think saunas, cold plunge rooms, and steam showers. “Everyone is looking for spa-like indulgences in the comfort of their home,” Nicole Hirsch of Nicole Hirsch Interiors states. “People are seeking to carve out spaces in their basements to create these little retreats.”

Ever since the pandemic, the desire to stay home hasn’t wavered. The goal has become to stay put and create luxurious spaces with wellness amenities at home. In addition to at-home spas, home gyms, yoga rooms, and meditation spaces continue to be popular. Ah, bliss.

Arched doorway, butlers pantry

Soft Curves and Organic Shapes

One trend that is especially striking is the rise of curved edges. “We’re moving away from sharp lines and rigid forms toward furniture and decor with soft, organic shapes,” Wiott says. Distancing ourselves from straight, uniform lines pairs perfectly with peaceful, cozy environments that encourage us to sit back and unwind.

“Curved sofas, arched doorways, and sculptural lighting create an approachable, relaxing atmosphere,” Wiott continues. “These shapes inspire comfort and ease—something we value deeply when designing spaces.”

Comfort and Durability

Gone are the days where rooms at home feel fancy, stuffy, and reserved for special occasions. 2025 design trends are all about marrying comfort and style. “More than ever, clients are requiring their homes to be not only visually appealing, but for the pieces to be comfortable and durable,” Hirsch says. “It’s not an either or. With the vast range of performance fabrics and durable metals, stones, and wood finishes, your furniture should check all the boxes.”

There are plenty of options for comfy, high-quality textiles that are built for wear and tear. Textured neutrals especially, will be everywhere, according to Hirsch. “May this trend never go away,” she says. “Combinations of luxe fabrics and finishes create a serene environment.”

Ashley Robertson Home Tour, kitchen

Statement Stonework

All three designers I chatted with predict that stoneware will be incredibly popular in 2025, but with a twist. “Colorful natural stones will be front and center, appearing in furniture, countertops, and accessories to add vibrance,” Danielle Chiprut of Danielle Rose Design Co. shares.Expect to see kitchens and bathrooms incorporating stones like onyx, green marble, or colorful quartzite to create unexpected focal points that blend organic appeal with striking hues.”

Wiott agrees. “Stone is no longer confined to countertops—it’s becoming a bold design statement,” she says. “Whether used for floors, feature walls, or sculptural pieces, veined marbles, and textured stones bring elegance and movement into interiors.”

In search of more ideas for statement stonework? “We are really leaning in on using one-of-a-kind marble slabs not just in bathrooms or kitchens, but on furniture pieces and bars—unique color stones with bold lines,” Hirsch recommends.

Kate Wit and Delight, living room

Bold, Saturated Colors

Even as warm neutrals continue to be popular, 2024 brought a resurgence of color and maximalism that is here to stay. “Deep, saturated tones like forest green, midnight blue, and aubergine will dominate in 2025,” Wiott states. “We layer textures within these palettes to create intimate, reflective spaces—perfect for bedrooms, libraries, or studies.”

Allowing your personality to shine through your home is always on trend, but playing with color, jewel tones specifically, will be especially popular in 2025. These dramatic shades will show up on feature walls, upholstery, and even art pieces, infusing spaces with energy and personality,” Chiprut says. “It’s all about making a statement while adding warmth and sophistication.”

Artisan, Hand-Crafted Furniture

Maximalism lends itself to highly personalized spaces, but there are other ways to infuse your own unique touch. Namely, custom furniture designed specifically for your home. “We’re seeing a huge push toward pieces that are hand-crafted and look as such,” Hirsch says. “Think gorgeous custom wood stains, organic shapes, and pieces specially made to fit a space.”

Customized furniture can make your house feel like a home, especially knowing you own a one-of-a-kind piece. Connect with local artisans to design a piece of furniture you love, or be on the lookout for makers who work with natural materials. Casa Zuma is a wonderful example, as they design and source beautiful handmade products.

25 DIY Christmas Decorations to Bring the Festivity Home

When the final month of the year hits, you can catch me crafting ornaments, homemade gifts, and garlands of all stripes. As I type away, I have dried oranges cooling on the stovetop and just put up my ornamental stars in the windows. During this season of holiday markets, Christmas movie marathons, and abundant baking, it can be gratifying to contribute to the festivities with a little handmade, festive flair.

So let’s get to making that magic together. Below, I’m sharing my favorite DIY Christmas decorations that I found through my hours of Pinterest scrolling (please tell me you can relate). They span minimalist and maximalist aesthetics, traditional Scandinavian designs, and advent calendars you won’t believe you made yourself. Let the crafting begin!

Library aesthetic living room

I recently returned to Edinburgh, Scotland, after 12 years away. I hadn’t been to this magical city since I was a college junior studying abroad there in 2012. Spending time visiting my old stomping grounds reinforced what a special, history-filled, place Edinburgh is, to say the least. (I’m already daydreaming about my next trip back!).

While the concept of dark academia wasn’t something that people talked about a decade ago, I firmly believe that Edinburgh is absolutely the capital of this aesthetic. The mixture of the university setting, historic buildings, tweed jackets, grand castle, and dimly-lit streets, just to name a few things, had me yearning to drop everything and relocate to Scotland. There, I’d surely put together the most charming flat full of moody Victorian pieces, rich, sumptuous fabrics, and plenty of leather-bound books.

How to Style the Library Aesthetic Look at Home

While such a move (most likely) isn’t in the cards for me, the good news is that any of us can replicate the library aesthetic in our own houses or apartments. Ahead, I’m going to show you how to do just that. Don’t blame me if you implement these decorating tips and become more of a homebody than ever—they sure are cozy!

Get Moody

Establishing a moody vibe is essential to nailing the dark academia aesthetic. One of the hotels I stayed in during my trip, 100 Princes Street, executed this perfectly. Their upstairs dining area is filled with pops of plaid, boasts multiple fireplaces, and includes worn-in leather chairs that look like they could have been plucked directly from a professor’s office. The nautical paintings in the room also play nicely to the library aesthetic and add a sense of timelessness to the room. Such a space truly is the perfect spot to sit back and sip a cup of tea or thumb through a book. The saturated tones make the room feel ultra cozy, like you’re being enveloped in a big hug.

Forgo the Plain White Walls

You’ll never find a dark academia style space that has plain white walls, nor will you find one with walls that are painted but bare. So bring on the deeply hued paint (maybe a deep blue or green, as pictured below!) or try some wallpaper. Finally, display all of the art! Now is the time to go all in with a gallery wall. Break things up by also hanging some mini mirrors or candle sconces, which will contribute to your desired look while adding visual interest. To save some money, you can weave in some digital downloads from Etsy that are easy to print out at home and often cost just a few dollars. Simply search “dark academia” on the site and you’ll be greeted with tons of options.

Make Your Space Layered, Not Cluttered

The dark academia aesthetic is all about a layered, lived-in look, but it’s important to note that these characteristics do not equal cluttered in a bad way! Yes, it’s more than okay to line an entire wall with books or display a collection of your favorite trinkets (or my personal favorite, bust sculptures) on a shelf. After all, it’s safe to say that dark academia isn’t really for minimalists.

That said, you will want to be sure to keep unsightly items like cords, piles of junk mail, and the like out of sight. This helps to preserve some of the magic that comes with dark academia—you should feel like you’re retreating to another time or place, and keeping reminders of everyday life strewed about won’t allow you to fully evoke that feeling.

Celebrate the Past

On a related note, as it pertains to accessories, think old, not new. Shopping at vintage and antique stores can be a great way to achieve the dark academia aesthetic, and you can definitely score some budget-friendly pieces that will play to this vision. Look for leather-bound books, sculptures and figurines, carved, ornate mirrors, plush armchairs (remember that you can recover anything with great bones), portrait and landscape paintings, and more. Now is not the time to go all in with contemporary pieces such as acrylic side tables or a bouclé sofa.

Shop the Library Aesthetic

Once you start shopping with the library aesthetic top of mind, you might be surprised at what stands out to you. Make a Pinterest board filled with dark academia spaces that inspire you and reference it as you pop from one store to another to help you stay focused!

Perfect Your Autumn Aesthetic: 8 Simple Ideas for a Fall Home Refresh https://camillestyles.com/design/fall-home-refresh-ideas/ https://camillestyles.com/design/fall-home-refresh-ideas/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=282301 Fall front porch.

Fall front porch.

October heralds the true beginning of fall, and I for one, couldn’t be happier. We’ve officially entered cozy season, a time that inspires hunkering down for cozy nights in. October brings a natural inclination to gather at home, which is all the more reason to spend some time designing a space that makes you happy. So I wondered—how do interior designers welcome the season in their own homes? While you may think they fill their spaces with the season’s latest trends, the designers I chatted with take a simpler approach. Read on for a few fall home refresh ideas, straight from the pros. Their answers may surprise you!

Adorn With Fresh Flowers

Decorating with flowers is appropriate for any time of year, but Sarah West of Sarah West Interiors shares that it’s a special part of her fall routine. “Every Sunday, I make it a ritual to visit my local farmer’s market and pick up fresh flowers. It’s something I look forward to each week, and it’s such a simple yet impactful way to refresh my home for the fall season,” she explains. “Rather than following the latest fall decor trends, I prefer to keep things understated—using fresh florals and cozy scents to create a warm, inviting atmosphere.”

West suggests looking for florals in deeper colors during this time of year. “For fall, I gravitate toward flowers like amaranth, calla lilies, and dried allium. I love the richness of deep hues, like plum and burgundy, which bring a seasonal warmth to any room,” she shares.

If you’re lucky enough to have your own plantings, you don’t need to look anywhere but your backyard. “I love cutting a branch from the Japanese maple blooming in my yard that has begun to turn shades of red and orange,” Danielle Balanis of Danielle Balanis Design says. “It channels everything I love about fall. It’s not forced, it feels right in any room.”

Cozy Up Your Lighting

Lighting is one of a few fall home refresh ideas that’s often overlooked. The source, as well as the hue of your light, matters especially when you want to create a cozy atmosphere. And let’s face it, fall also wouldn’t be fall without candles. “Accentuating antiques and beautiful wood pieces in your space by adding taper candle stands is an old school way of creating a moody environment,” Devika Kanadé of The Itih?as Company says. “The yellow light of candle flames definitely adds a sense of warmth.”

Taper candles look gorgeous on any surface, from your wood pieces like Kanadé shares, to your mantle, and your coffee and dining tables. Another way to add warm lighting without candles? Swap out your bulbs. “If your space usually uses white light, swap it out for yellow bulbs in a lower watt, to create the same feeling. [It’s] a simple, inexpensive swap to change the colors and tones of your space,” Kanadé says.

Let Nature Be Your Guide

Mother Nature is the greatest designer there is, and Kanadé herself loves bringing the outdoors in. “Letting nature and earth tones take the lead can really help accent the jewel tones and rich colors of fall,” she says.

Kanadé suggests incorporating dry florals and foraged pieces into your home, as well as creating your own decor with natural materials. “An unusual shaped piece of wood can be used as a centerpiece if you melt taper candles all over to create a unique candle stand,” she suggests.

Add Warm Scents

Who doesn’t love the scent of pumpkin and cinnamon? Fall is one of the most incredible seasons for fragrance, especially for your home. “Scent plays a huge role in creating a cozy ambiance,” West gushes. “One of my favorites is Aesop’s Istros Aromatique Room Spray—it has a smoky, floral blend that’s just right for fall.”

Whether you opt to fill your fall home with candles, room spray, or diffuser reeds, reach for grounded, warm, and spicy scents for fall. “When it comes to candles, I adore Aesop’s Ptolemy Aromatique Candle for its earthy fragrance, as well as Jenni Kayne’s candles, which add a comforting touch to any space,” West continues.

Balanis keeps things simple in her home. “The Fresh Market puts out cinnamon broomsticks every year, for me they are a go-to and constant every fall,” she says. “I love the smell and the charm of having it leaned in the corner. It brings warmth and comfort to my breakfast room and livens up my kitchen.”

Incorporate Jewel Tones

Color is one fall home refresh idea that is perhaps most obvious. But don’t think you need to deck your home out in bright orange and red! “I love highlighting deep and rich colors, like jewel tones,” Kanadé shares. Sapphire, ruby and emerald green are wonderful colors to work with this time of year, and Balanis agrees. “Shades of saffron and mustard are a yearlong favorite of mine, but they really come alive in the fall,” she says. “They pair well with all fall color palette shades. From freshly pressed napkins to accents in floral arrangements, this tone just blends so perfectly with all things fall.”

Decorate With Shades Of Brown

Brown continues to have its moment in the spotlight this year, and it’s the perfect color to play with come fall. Kanadé has noticed this trend as well and loves working with different toned wood, as well as brown paint. Not sure where to start? Kanadé suggests looking up. “A fun, temporary way to add character to your space for fall can be to paint your ceiling a darker color like brown, cherry or burgundy,” she recommends. “It adds depth to your space without overwhelming it, adds moodiness and creates a stunning backdrop with simpler lighter tones on floor level.”

If you’re a bit nervous about having a dark ceiling year round, Kanadé is quick to share that paint is temporary. “You can always paint your ceiling back to a lighter color going into spring,” she says. “The beauty of paint!”

Layer and Mix Your Textures

A cozy fall home wouldn’t feel complete without soft, luxurious textures. “Fall is a great time for mixing textures and layering on dining tables and in living spaces,” Kanadé says. “Bringing out throws in velvets, tweed, and corduroy is a great way to play around with materials that add a lot of warmth.”

In addition to cozy throws, consider swapping curtains for something a little softer like velvet. There’s an art to layering throw pillows on your sofa, and including a mix of colors and textures will make it especially inviting. And if layering textures begins to feel complicated and fussy, take a step back. Remember to keep it simple. “For fall styling, my philosophy is to keep things simple—fresh flowers, warm scents, and a cozy blanket by the fire are all you need to embrace the season’s natural beauty,” she says.

Dust Off Your Seasonal Tableware

Fall home refresh ideas are great not only for autumn, but for preparing for the upcoming holiday season as well. If you’re on hosting duties this year, the time has come to dust off your seasonal serveware and tableware. Instead of keeping it hidden away for special occasions, Kanadé encourages using it as unexpected decor. “Bringing out fancier china and unique tableware, but using them as display pieces as opposed to functional pieces can change up the styling of your space to give it a refresh,” she encourages. “Glassware in darker colors is also simple but effective.”

Neutrals will truly never go out of style. No matter your design preferences, neutrals are bound to play an integral part of your home. And even though neutral shades are timeless, the trend pendulum has a tendency to swing. In 2024, it’s about embracing warmth. You may have even noticed a theme in this fall’s paint trends. There’s no doubt about it: brown is this year’s favorite neutral. Ahead, I chatted with designers and got the scoop on all things brown home decor. Read on to learn everything you need to know about this season’s coziest shade.

Brown, neutral kitchen

Every designer agrees—brown home decor is trending because we’re collectively yearning for warmer, cozier spaces. “Brown is having a moment because of the gray backlash,” Amelia Strat and Anna Kroesser of Kroesser + Strat Design share. “For so long, no one wanted warm, yellowy tones. Everything was leaning white and gray.”

It’s true, gray was the go-to neutral for years. It was even coined “Millenial gray” on social media earlier this year. “Monochrome tones of gray and white felt crisp and clean at the time,” Alexis Pew of Kaminski + Pew says. “People are now yearning for softer, more inviting spaces that create a sense of calm.”

Brown is certainly not as stark and cool as gray, and the earth tone naturally emits a soothing energy that is perfect for interiors. Not to mention, everyone looks good in brown. “Brown is incredibly versatile and flattering, especially when it comes to complementing a wide range of skin tones,” Nicole Roe of R. Nickson Interiors states. “Because it’s a color rooted in nature, brown has a grounding effect that allows the eye to settle, creating a sense of calm and comfort in any space.”

How do I incorporate brown into my home?

There are many ways to incorporate brown home decor into your space from paint, wallpaper, furniture, and decor. Here are a few tips for styling with brown from the pros.

Play with texture

Texture is always important in design. You want to have a few to keep everything balanced and interesting in your space. Roe loves that brown has the ability to shine across a variety of textures. “Imagine a rich brown velvet, a buttery caramel leather, or a mid-tone knobby fabric. All these textures add depth and warmth to a room, making it feel cozy yet refined,” she shares.

Layering brown tones is also perfect for this time of year. “As we are gearing up for fall, something about brown tones in textures such as suede, velvet, and leather is just so appealing,” Allison Handler of Allison Handler Design says. I love brown. It is the perfect neutral in my opinion.”

Use all shades of brown

“One of the best things about brown is how well different shades flow together, from deep espresso to warm caramels and tans,” Roe says. “These shades can be layered effortlessly to create a rich, cohesive palette that feels both sophisticated and inviting.”

There’s no need to create a monochromatic space (though you could if you wanted!), but including different variations of brown can create a cozy vibe. Opt for lighter tones to keep your room airy and calm, and darker browns for drama and romance. “From deep espressos to rich caramels, brown hues exude a grounded, earthy feel that makes spaces feel cozy and inviting,” both Katie Browning and Heather Lucas of Lucas Browning Design share. After years of cooler tones dominating design, we think there’s a collective craving for warmth and comfort, and brown really delivers.”

Pair brown with different colors

The versatility of brown means it pairs nicely with a variety of different color palettes. “When paired with feminine tones like pink and purple, it grounds the space, preventing it from feeling too delicate,” Roe states. “On the other hand, mixing brown with greens and other deep tones can create a space that feels strong and masculine.”

No matter your design style and color preferences, brown can be a great neutral to work with, and that includes pairing it with black. “One of our favorite combinations is brown mixed with black, which adds a touch of modernity and edge, making any room feel both timeless and contemporary,” Roe continues. “Brown truly is the perfect backdrop for both classic and modern design.”

Fall in love with wood

I’d be remiss to not include wood in this deep dive into brown home decor, and Summer Jensen of Hawk & Co. agrees. “I’m really excited to move into more brown woods,” Jensen says. “The warmth is familiar and grounding.”

Embracing warm and rich brown wood is great for those who don’t love yellow undertones, which according to Jensen, is many of her clients. “As much as I love bleached white oak, the palette becomes somewhat defined by the underlying color, yellow,” she says. “Most of my clients don’t like yellow; however, the hardness of oak really makes for one of the best interior products we can use.”

Substitute dark brown for black

Love black but want to switch it up? “Dark brown can be substituted in any situation where black is called for,” Jensen recommends. “I like brown for its depth and contrast without being stark black.”

Substituting dark brown for black will instantly elevate your space and add an unexpected luxurious touch. “It adds a sumptuousness with color names like deep caviar, fudge truffle, and mink—the associations to indulgence start from the time you pick up the sample,” Jensen says.

Don’t forget taupe and cream

Shades of brown include lighter shades like cream and taupe as well. Just like deep browns can create a luxurious feel, Strat and Kroesser know that softer shades of brown can, too. “Taupe has been a consistent favorite brown tone of ours in the last few years. It’s just such a sophisticated, grown-up feeling color,” they share.“ We recently wrapped a whole primary bedroom in velvet taupe wallpaper, and installed a custom bed wrapped in the most luscious textured fabric in a similar color. It all felt so chic together!”

Pair brown with natural materials

If you’re not sure where to start with texture, Browning and Lucas suggest turning toward materials found in nature. “Brown pairs beautifully with natural materials like wood, stone, and leather, which not only highlights its warmth but also adds a timeless, organic touch to any space,” they suggest. “Whether we’re styling with rich, moody tones or light, sandy neutrals, brown is versatile enough to work across design styles, from transitional spaces to modern.”

The essence of autumn.

The post 10 Fall Candles To Turn Your Home Into a Cozy Haven appeared first on Camille Styles.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that fall is the best time of year. It’s not just opinion—the objective fact of it all is that autumn packs the activities and seasonal traditions we spend all year looking forward to embracing. Plowing through our reading lists, cozying up with our fall beverage of choice (I’m team chaider), and making all the pumpkin treats. Of course, it’s also the time when we swap out our summer scents for something a little moodier, a little dark academia-coded, and yes—a bit spicy and sweet. The best fall candles of 2024? Boxes, checked.

The Best Fall Candles to Scent the Season

There’s something undeniably enchanting about fall. As the leaves turn and the air takes on that unmistakable crispness, it’s a reminder to embrace cozy nights in. Autumn is an invitation to slip on our sweaters and gather around the table with loved ones, enjoying the warmth of a hearty meal. But beyond the food, festivities, and fall rituals, candles set the scene for this magical time of year.

The best fall candles fill our homes with the comforting scents of the season. Everything from spiced apples to rich woods to warm vanilla fills our homes with these reminders of sensory delights. What’s more, candles go beyond just a flicker of light. They’re the finishing touch that turns your home into a haven. Whether you’re welcoming guests or savoring a moment of solitude, the right candle can instantly transform the atmosphere. Read on to discover the best fall candles to elevate your space.

Best Overall: Hearth & Hand™ with Magnolia Tinted Glass Harvest Chestnut Scalloped Jar Candle

You’ve found it: pure autumnal vibes wrapped up in a jar. With its rich, nutty fragrance and warm, amber glow, this candle feels like a cozy night in by the fire—minus the smoke. The vessel itself is so chic, with a timeless scalloped edge that makes it as much a statement piece as it is a seasonal essential. I’m planning to burn this anytime I want to indulge in a quiet evening. (That is, when I’m re-watching Emily in Paris Season 4 for the umpteenth time. I can’t be stopped.)

Best Pumpkin: Voluspa Spiced Pumpkin Latte

You know her, you love her, you buy her every September without fail. And if you don’t? Let me introduce you to the best pumpkin candle around. While I love picking up the Trader Joe’s pumpkin tin candle during my weekly stock-up, this is the more elevated version. (And yes, while still accessible, the price difference matches the bump-up in quality.) With notes of creamy pumpkin, whipped coconut, and cinnamon spice, it’s like savoring a sip of your first PSL of the season. Encased in Voluspa’s signature embossed glass jar, this candle doesn’t just smell like autumn—it looks the part, too.

Best Reusable Vessel: OWIU Goods Forest Candle

Everything OWIU Goods produces is a gift to behold. We interviewed founder Amanda Gunawan last year in her LA home, and it’s obvious that her intentional lifestyle extends to everything—ceramics, matcha, and candles—she creates. This candle brings the tranquility of the woods straight to your home. With earthy notes of cedar, sandalwood, and a hint of moss, it’s basically the next best thing to a forest bath. (Actually, better.) Minimalist in design but rich in scent, this candle is housed in a sleek ceramic vessel that adds a modern touch of character to any space.

Best Vanilla: Haven Well Within Gather Candle

Designed to evoke warmth and togetherness, this candle emanates cozy notes of vanilla, sandalwood, and clove. Perfect for minimalist candle lovers, this timeless neutral jar will be right at home in any space—transforming a room into an inviting sanctuary. I love burning it during intimate dinners and afternoon writing sessions when I want to feel focused and centered. Light it up, and let the rich, layered scent bring a sense of calm and connection to your favorite fall moments.

Best for Minimalists: Jenni Kayne Cedar Glass Candle

Come for the sweaters, stay for the candles. Like all of the brand’s apparel and home goods, this candle is the epitome of understated elegance. Infused with the grounding scent of cedar and soft notes of pine, it brings the crisp, woodsy air of autumn right into your home. And while I’ve been known to spin around other candles to keep the label concealed, I love the contemporary design it displays. (Also yes, I want you to know I’m an insider and thought to pick up the best fall candles from Jenni Kayne.) For an effortlessly cool, seasonal warmth, look no further.

Best Unexpected Scent: Salt & Stone Saffron & Cedar Candle

Cedar is expected—saffron is not. This candle is the perfect blend of exactly what you think fall should smell like but with a hard-to-put-your-finger-on twist. This luxurious blend of spice and wood exudes an exotic scent grounded by an earthy cedar. It’s sophisticated and sleek, adding a modern touch to your decor while filling the room with a rich, lingering aroma. Get ready to transform your home into an autumnal retreat.

Best Calming: Blueme Spiritual Palo Santo & Vetiver

This candle feels like a ritual in itself—instantly calming and uplifting. Cleansing, woody notes of palo santo are balanced by vetiver’s earthy warmth. Designed to clear the air and soothe the soul, it’s exactly what you want to burn during any cozy fall pursuit. Whether you’re meditating, journaling, or simply relaxing, this candle brings a sense of clarity and peace to any moment, making it a must for your seasonal self-care routine.

Best for Book Lovers: Aerangis No. 40 Livraria Antiga

As I alluded to above, reading (binge-reading, in particular) is one of my favorite things to do in the fall. For that reason, I surround myself with anything bibliophilic. Because this candle smells like stepping into the coziest library, you can bet I’m stocking up. It’s reminiscent of the best bookstores, where the air is filled with the scent of leather-bound books, polished wood, and maybe a touch of mystery. With deep, smoky notes of aged paper, cedarwood, and a hint of spice, this candle transports you to a time and place where stories linger in the air.

Best Affordable: Fablerune Pumpkin Soy Candle

It’s no secret—candles aren’t exactly cheap. That’s why, when you can find one that strikes the perfect balance between affordable and elevated, you should buy 10. This candle—a delightful ode to our favorite fall flavor—is an excellent alternative to the Voluspa pumpkin. Its creamy pumpkin scent is complemented by hints of vanilla and nutmeg, nodding to the sensory experience of a homemade pumpkin pie emerging from the oven. If you like your pumpkin candles a little earthier as opposed to sweet, this is your pick.

Best Masculine Scent: Cereria Molla Velvet Wood Candle

For those of us who love a scent that leans a little more masculine, this rich, opulent aroma exudes understated sophistication. With its deep notes of velvety sandalwood, warm amber, and a hint of sweet vanilla, this candle is the perfect blend of refined comfort. Light it up and lean into the ultimate in sensory luxury. I love burning it on a crisp fall evening whenever the occasion calls for a touch of elegance.

People gathered around table

Everywhere you turn, there’s proof that social media is the ultimate highlight reel. Pregnancies, promotions, and relationship launches—”soft” and “hard.” But as a young millennial myself, there’s one that seems to populate my feeds most of all: the post announcing a new home. Whether it be an apartment or the purchase of a new house, after a few years that saw many of my friends (myself included) moving back home, we deserve to claim and curate our own little havens. And there’s no way I like to celebrate that milestone more than with my favorite housewarming gifts.

Yes, I said celebrate. While social media can make us feel bitter and cynical at times, it can also inspire greater kindness and support. Personally, I’ve stepped into this year with the perspective that I’m going to *actually* engage with content that I find exciting and uplifting. I’m going to cheer on my friends and spread positivity instead of simply being a bystander.

The Fall Textile Trends of 2024 Are In—And They’re Gorgeous https://camillestyles.com/design/fall-textile-trends/ https://camillestyles.com/design/fall-textile-trends/#respond Tue, 10 Sep 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=279329

Bold patterns, block prints, and more.

The post The Fall Textile Trends of 2024 Are In—And They’re Gorgeous appeared first on Camille Styles.

Autumn is right around the corner, and many people are beginning to fold away their summer ‘fits and weave new fabrics into their wardrobes—hello, chunky knit sweaters and plaid button downs. But there’s no reason to call it a day once you’ve switched over your closet. The start of the new season is always a wonderful time to evaluate your home decor, too, and spent some time rethinking the textiles that you’ve been incorporating in your space. Summer is all about lightweight, linen fabrics and simple hues, but fall textile trends welcome an opportunity to experiment with a bit more pattern and weave new shades into your space, designers say.

Here, four interior designers comment on the seven biggest fall textile trends that they’re loving for 2024. You can implement as many of these as you wish into your space or simply select one or two looks that speak to you. These trends will complement a range of design aesthetics wonderfully, whether your home decor leans timeless and traditional or you prefer an eclectic look.

Corresponding Wallpapers and Fabrics

Do not assume that because you used one specific print on your walls you have to select another for your accent seating or drapery. Becky Carbone, the founder of Becky Carbone Interiors, is partial to sticking with one singular print across the board. “It feels really cohesive without being too busy,” she says.

Not quite ready to go so bold? You could also draw from your drapery and use that fabric on the bed or sofa. To ensure that your space still has some variation, Carbone offers another trick: “Adding a trim or cording in an accent color then layering in lampshades in coordinating prints helps complete the look,” she says.

Artistic, Bold Patterns

Need help selecting a pattern to use throughout your space? Amy Youngblood, the founder of Amy Youngblood Interiors, has been witnessing an increased use of “artistic, bold patterned fabrics,” including florals, abstract-looking patterns, and mid-century modern-inspired patterns. She advises pairing these with pops of solids for a stylish look.

Shop Artistic and Bold Accents

Lots of Green

Bring on the green textiles this fall, Carbone says. “Greens go well with so many accent colors and wood finishes, and it’s so nice to see more of a rich layering of different shades of greens, and not just blues or neutrals on their own,” she says. When working with greens, Carbone gravitates toward prints as opposed to solids, so long as they all complement one another nicely. “I love trying to incorporate as many prints as I can but making it a balance between a large scale print, a medium, and maybe two small scale patterns so it feels cohesive,” she explains.

Shop Green Accents

Block Prints

Lisa Gilmore, the founder of Lisa Gilmore Design, says that she is in a “major hand blocking phase” this season. “It’s such a great way to bring patterns into a room, but it feels handmade and warm,” she says. Better yet, there is truly a block print for everyone. “I love that there are different patterns and scales out there,” Gilmore says. At the moment, she’s been enjoying pairing small hand blocked florals with classic striped textiles.

Shop Block Print Accents

Contrasting Welts

It’s easy to add extra flair to throw pillows, accent chairs, sofas, and more by opting for contrasting welts cords. “It’s just such a fun way to take a plain piece of furniture and make it feel a bit more bold and alive,” says Gilmore, who is enjoying implementing this tactic in many of her current projects. “I’m currently working on a project with a deep, mossy green velvet sectional, and we are piping it in a contrasting magenta velvet welt.”

Shop Contrasting Welt Accents

Sweet Details

Charming accents are having a moment in the textile world, says Melissa Oholendt, founder of Oho Interiors. “Thanks to the nostalgia of grandmillenial design and maximalist design converging into one for fall, our projects have welcomed these details,” she says. “Whether adding a tennis pleat to a cushion or an embroidered tape to a ruffle pillow or the cutest leather ties to a chair cover, we live in the details of making the items we use everyday feel special.”

Shop Sweet Accents

Traditional Handwoven Detailing

Say hello to homespun accents this season. Oholendt is fawning over fabrics that boast traditional embroidery or artisanal weaving techniques. “While a printed fabric will remain a classic, we find ourselves gravitating in selections to patterns that have a handcrafted feel for fall,” she says.

This Bold New Design Trend Might Make You Rethink Your Neutral Home https://camillestyles.com/design/color-drenching/ https://camillestyles.com/design/color-drenching/#respond Wed, 28 Aug 2024 10:30:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=278474 Coral living room and mantle

Coral living room and mantle

Having a bold and dramatic design aesthetic may not come easily for some, but this year’s interior trends are daring us to be a little more playful at home. While creating spaces that ooze calm and serenity is one thing, there’s also something to be said about a home that screams personality and style. You can do both with one of the biggest paint trends of the year: color drenching.

I got the scoop on this bold design aesthetic from Sarah Stacey of Sarah Stacey Interior Design, as well as Mark Schubert, founder and lead designer of Phillip Harrison Interiors. Read on for their expert tips on how to incorporate color drenching in your own home, no matter your design preference.

What is color drenching?

This moody and contemporary paint trend is all about enveloping yourself in one shade. “Color drenching is about fully covering a space in color—with minimal contrast and no white at all,” Stacey explains. “This approach applies color everywhere, from walls and ceilings to trim and furnishings, creating a cohesive, calming atmosphere.”

Color drenching can be seen this year in monochromatic spaces—think one color everywhere. This look is anything but boring—a color-drenched room incorporates many different textures to keep the space captivating and comfortable. It can even include different shades of the same color. A color-drenched room is, in short, stunning.

How do you know what color to pick?

Color drenching a room goes beyond just loving a certain shade or hue. Before you choose your drenching color, decide how you want to feel in your space. “Consider starting with a rich, deep color that resonates with the mood you want to create, such as a calming blue or a dramatic green,” Schubert recommends. “Apply this color not only to the wall but also to the ceilings, baseboards, doors and even furniture. This uniformity creates a cocooning effect that envelops the space in color.”

Color drenching an office in a vibrant hue like pink or orange could be an excellent choice for creativity and energy. However, you definitely want to go with a more serene color like blue or green for a bedroom. A powder room is a great place to experiment, so don’t be afraid to go bold with your choices here. It can also be helpful to know which pieces of furniture and decor you’d like to use in your space as well. Choosing a paint color that’s complementary to the pieces you want to incorporate will keep the design plan cohesive.

Color Drenching Design Tips

Not playing it safe can be daunting. If you’re considering trying this paint trend out yourself, remember that color drenching can evoke many different vibes and feelings—it all depends on how you style your space. Here are a few design tips from the pros.

Layer shades and textures

Just because a room is all one color doesn’t mean creating a cohesive look is as easy as painting all the walls. A well designed room consists of lots of different layers, and Schubert suggests playing around with various textures and finishes within the same color family. “For a cohesive look, try using matte on the walls, glossy or satin finishes on the trim, or velvets for furniture items,” Schubert suggests. “Incorporating contrasting accents subtly through metallics or wood tones will break up the monochrome without diluting the impact.”

He also suggests tonal variations of the same shade through accessories like throw pillows, rugs, or artwork. Once you have your paint color, be on the lookout for accents that are slightly lighter or darker to give your space plenty of visual interest and balance.

Consider lighting

A major tip for painting a room is knowing what kind of light you get in your space. Paint can appear to magically change color depending on the time of day, or what kind of light bulbs you use in your lamps. Be sure you try a paint sample before color drenching and notice what it does in the light.

“Lighting plays a crucial role,” Schubert says. “Selecting a warm color temperature for your light fixtures will make the space feel cozy and comfortable. Ensure that natural light interacts harmoniously with the chosen color, enhancing the depth and dimension of the space.”

Use timeless patterns

Even though color drenching is currently trending, there are ways to style your space that will keep it timeless. “Select patterns and materials that are lasting, such as a gingham or plaid, floral prints, and even stripes tend to lean toward that elevated, timeless feel.” Schubert says. Stacey also mentions that even though color drenching is currently popular, it’s not entirely new.

“Color drenching has been around for years, but its recent surge in popularity has finally given it a name,” she shares. “It’s exciting to see this concept resonate with so many people.” If you’re still wary about your home eventually falling out of fashion, stick with smaller spaces like a powder room or Butler’s pantry. That way, it will be easier to switch up the style, more so than a kitchen or living room.

Incorporate black

Another way to add visual interest to your color-drenched space is to add pops of black. “Incorporating black elements can add depth, balancing the room without making it feel too sweet,” Stacey shares. “This strategy creates a stronger visual impact and results in a more sophisticated, curated design.”

It’s also worth mentioning that you can absolutely color drench with darker hues. Darker spaces will make you want to wind down and relax, so a color-drenched bedroom or den would be ideal. Navy, charcoal, or even deep green or burgundy are great choices.

Pick an accent color

Color drenching tends to focus on one color, but Stacey suggests incorporating accent colors into your design plan. “While the trend often leans toward using a limited range of colors, like all pinks, I recommend keeping it fresh and timeless by layering two or three colors that complement a dominant, more saturated ‘punchy’ hue,” she shares. “Used sparingly, this punchy color adds just enough energy and interest to make the space feel special without overwhelming it.”

One of my biggest life accomplishments is that I’ve kept my beloved fiddle leaf fig alive for six years now. This may seem silly, but if you know how finicky these plants are, you know this is not an easy feat. I remember seeing them all over my favorite home bloggers’ spaces and I pined for one of my own. They eventually got popular enough that they started to make regular appearances at Costco. My mom graciously scooped one up for me. Now the indoor house plant trend is slowly shifting. Instead of the fiddle leaf fig’s large and glorious leaves making a statement, designers are opting for a plant with a more delicate, understated beauty. And that plant is the black olive tree, otherwise known as the Shady Lady.

Everything to Know About the Black Olive Tree, aka “Shady Lady”

I chatted with Lily Cox, co-founder and CMO of Rewild to get the lowdown on all things Shady Lady. Rewild is a specialty house plant shop with multiple locations in the Washington DC area. Ready to learn about the design world’s new It-girl plant? Read on for everything you need to know!

Lily Cox
Lily Cox

Lily Cox is the co-founder and CMO of Rewild, a specialty house plant shop with multiple locations in the Washington DC area.

What is the Shady Lady?

This plant goes by a few names—the black olive tree, the Shady Lady or its botanical name Bucida buceras. They are striking trees that contain an abundance of tiny leaves. Their delicate foliage have made them a recent favorite with designers, especially on the west coast. “This plant has been making the rounds for the past couple years now,” Cox shares. “If you’ve had other plants, especially other trees like a ficus or a fiddle leaf, then you’ll be able to manage a Shady Lady easily.”

When indoors, black olive trees can grow upwards of 15 feet. It’s best to give them a home with room to grow. These warm-weather plants are native to the Caribbean and South and Central America. They require lots of light and diligent watering. While some say the black olive tree is a high maintenance plant, Cox’s experience with the Shady Lady has been unexpectedly pleasant. “The team at Rewild has been resoundingly very surprised at how easy and straightforward of a plant it is,” she states.

How much light does a black olive tree need?

It’s very easy to fall in love with a plant simply based on aesthetics—especially the Shady Lady. I’ve brought home a few plants that quickly perished because I had no idea what kind of environment and care they needed. I just liked the way it looked. If you have your sights set on bringing a black olive tree into your home, you’ll need to be sure you have a spot that gets a lot of sun.

“They do like light,” Cox shares. “You don’t have to have them in an unobstructed south facing window exclusively, though they’ll be fine in the vicinity of a south, east, or west facing window.” Picking a spot in your home that gets consistent light throughout the day is best. You want to be sure you see the light touch the leaves of your black olive tree, and that the light hits as much of the foliage as possible. Leaves that don’t get enough light will begin to droop and eventually fall. As long as you have a sunny spot in your home, your black olive tree should thrive.

“They’ve done really well in our care. They’ve dropped very few leaves even, which surprised me, because they have so many tiny, beautiful little leaves on them,” Cox gushes. “They’re surprisingly well behaved.”

How often should I water a black olive tree?

Cox waters her Shady Lady about once a week and pays close attention to the black olive tree’s soil. “They like diligent watering,” she says. “We determine their need for water by sticking a finger straight in the soil at the base of the plant up to the first knuckle of your index finger. The top two inches need to feel dry. Then give it a good deep watering.”

If you’re not sure if the soil is dry enough, Cox recommends giving it a day or two. Check again and be sure there’s no moisture after 24 hours. Instead of keeping your black olive tree on a strict watering schedule, however, Cox recommends forming an interactive relationship with your plant. “I have a tendency to steer away from a prescriptive approach to plant care and more of a reactive approach to plant care. It makes your life so much easier,” she says.

The amount of water your black olive tree needs is dependent on how much light your plant is getting daily and how dry the air is in your home. She recommends finding a unique routine for you and your plant, simply by checking in on the soil and watering when it’s dry. “Having good drainage is really important though,” she notes. “Be sure there’s plenty of space for the water to exit the bottom of the pot once the contents of the pot have thoroughly saturated.”

Where can I get a black olive tree?

Even though this plant is quite popular, they’re not common in specialty plant stores just yet. Cox recommends looking at your local plant shops and asking shop owners if they can get their hands on one for you. “If your local plant shop has an established enough relationship with various growers, you can ask them to procure one for you,” she says. There are also faux options as well if your home doesn’t have adequate lighting.

How do I style the Shady Lady in my home?

The Shady Lady has been quietly popping up all over interior design print magazines and the like. While this year’s interior trends have been all about maximalism and bold design choices, the black olive tree is the most coveted indoor plant currently and is known for its delicate and demure features. If you’re looking to create a sense of calm in your home, or you’d like to add a touch of luxury to your space, the Shady Lady is an obvious indoor plant choice. “I think they work really well in homes with a European or a Mediterranean vibe,” Cox says. “Or even a west coast, specifically LA aesthetic.”

Adding a plant like a black olive tree to your home will breathe life into your space. The Shady Lady is tall, picturesque and would look stunning in a living room, an entryway, or even in a bedroom. It’s also worth noting that these trees don’t actually produce fruit. (No need to worry about plucking black olives!) As long as you have plenty of sunlight and are willing to water them as needed, the Shady Lady will be a fantastic addition to your home.

Nancy Meyers’ Interiors Are Iconic—A Designer Shares How to Get the Look https://camillestyles.com/design/nancy-meyers-interiors/ https://camillestyles.com/design/nancy-meyers-interiors/#respond Sun, 28 Jul 2024 10:00:00 +0000 https://camillestyles.com/?p=275766 Diane Keaton-approved.

The post Nancy Meyers’ Interiors Are Iconic—A Designer Shares How to Get the Look appeared first on Camille Styles.

]]>
Filmmaker and design icon Nancy Meyers famously told ELLE Decor in 2012 that she treats the homes in her movies like they’re main characters. Her interiors are an extension of her leading ladies in her films, and it’s clear that she puts an incredible amount of work into these homes which in reality, are just very well-dressed sound stages. It’s this thought and intention that makes them all the more impressive.

Bright, open kitchen

How to Bring the Nancy Meyers Aesthetic Home

It makes complete sense that “Nancy Meyers aesthetic” is trending. Who wouldn’t want to capture some of the joy and ease that her films evoke? I chatted with designer Joshua Smith and we did a deep dive into what we think people are really after when they say they want a Nancy Meyers interior—and how to achieve the look yourself.

Joshua Smith
Joshua Smith

After attending the New York School of Interior Design, Joshua Smith began his career under the guidance of Steven Gambrel. Going on to launch his own design firm in 2013, he was named a “rising star” and “one to watch” by House Beautiful magazine just over a year later. Over the years, Joshua has built an impressive portfolio ranging from modern sanctuaries to country estates.

There’s no arguing that Nancy Meyers interiors are universally loved. They’re cozy, warm, and we all want to jump through the screen to be in them ourselves, even though her film sets are completely different design styles. “All her interiors speak different languages, yet they all conjure the same feeling of I want to fall into that,” Smith says. It’s a retreat. There’s something about them that feels good. It doesn’t matter if the home is coastal, country, California, cottage, or traditional—what we get is Nancy Meyers cool. We all want a little bit of that in our lives—a feeling of je ne sais quoi she brings to all of her spaces.”

When we move beyond aesthetics, or what a home looks like, the appeal of Meyers’ interiors is very clear. Smith sees it when he’s working with design clients as well. “People don’t buy houses based on what they look like, but what they feel like,” he shares.

Ashley Robertson living room

How do you get the Nancy Meyers aesthetic?

The Nancy Meyers aesthetic is more than a look—it’s a feeling. “I call it livable beauty,” Smith remarks. “You can have a space with a sofa, a coffee table, some chairs, and a rug that will be put together and styled, but it’s the layers that will make it feel like home. I think that’s what Nancy does so well.”

So what do layers in a home look like? “It’s the blankets in baskets, or the stack of books by the chair,” Smith says. “We think it’s the big stuff like the sofa that’s going to make a house a home, but it’s actually the sentimental item on the centerpiece of the coffee table that makes it interesting.”

Nancy Meyers interiors are beautiful, but she prioritizes emotional connection. The homes in her films are lived in, comfortable, and they reflect the personality of its occupants. So when it comes to recreating looks for yourself in your own home, imagine who you would be in a Nancy Meyers film. Truly! Who are you? How can your home be an extension of your wants and needs, as well as your personality and style? What’s important to you? And of course, when you step into your home, what do you want to feel?

If this sounds overwhelming or perhaps you just need a little guidance, I’ve rounded up a few favorite Nancy Meyers interiors, the feelings they evoke, and a little more about their particular design style. Check it out below!

The Hamptons Beach House In Something’s Gotta Give

If you want to feel: Energized, light, and ready to fall in love in a house by the sea (whether you actually are or not).

Then recreate: Diane Keaton’s beach home in Something’s Gotta Give

The vibe: Coastal Grandma, quintessential beach house charm

Diane Keaton’s character, Erica Barry, is the blueprint for Coastal Grandma aesthetic. She lives in a sprawling, beautiful beach house in the Hamptons. It’s drenched in blue and white, has rows and rows of books and features plush, overstuffed couches. It’s the perfect setting for a summer romance on the coast.

“It evokes the feeling of bright light, and we all crave that,” Smith says. There is a freshness that permeates the large, open living space of this iconic beach house and Smith says to be mindful of where in your own home you decide to recreate the look. “I always say there’s going to be one moody space in a home where you go and cocoon, and you’re not going to cocoon in the Something’s Gotta Give living room because it’s so bright!” Smith exclaims. “It’s so fresh, it’s light, and you’re going to feel great, vibrant, and energized in a space like that.”

Opt for a coastal living room or an office space that will no doubt keep you inspired. Erica Barry was a playwright after all, and her sprawling desk faced an enormous window, drenching her in sunlight.

Shop The Hamptons Beach House Aesthetic

The Cottage in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Curled up in cozy knits, sipping hot cocoa in the English countryside.

Then recreate: Kate Winslet’s cottage in The Holiday

The vibe: Cottagecore

If the Something’s Gotta Give beach house is bright and energizing, the Rosehill Cottage in The Holiday is on the other side of the design spectrum. “You want to cozy up and read a book in that house,” Smith says. “I want a mug of something, sleeves so long they cover my hands—it’s that kind of energy. It’s like a warm hug”

Recreating the Rosehill Cottage can be tricky, since so much of the charm of the home lies in the architecture that won’t be found in a newer home. The stone walls and wood beams add a ton of character to this cozy cottage, but that doesn’t mean you can’t evoke similar feelings yourself. Thrift chintzy, overstuffed armchairs and don’t be afraid to mismatch patterns. Use a tufted ottoman instead of a coffee table and go for a shabby chic look in your living room or bedroom. Estate sales are full of vintage pieces that would look adorable in a Rosehill Cottage-inspired room. If you find pieces that make you want to curl up with a good book, take that as a good sign!

Shop The Cottage Aesthetic

The California Mansion in The Holiday

If you want to feel: Cool, chic and put together.

Then recreate: Cameron Diaz’s home in The Holiday

The vibe: Contemporary California cool

Juxtaposing the cozy cottage in The Holiday was Cameron Diaz’s California mansion. When describing this home, Smith kept coming back to two words. “So cool, so modern,” he states. While not everyone can live in a mansion, there are ways to evoke similar feelings in your own home. “It’s very tailored. There’s a lot of white, no patterns in this home,” Smith observes. “It’s understated luxury.”

If you want to bring a California cool vibe into your own home, opt for white slip-covered furniture, simple seagrass rugs, and black accents. There are lots of plants and large open windows in this home, so adorn your own with plenty of greenery to add some vibrancy. Have lots of table lamps to give the space some warmth with lighting. Invite your neighbors over and share a meal, just like Iris did in the film.

The Father of the Bride House

If you want to feel: The joy and coziness of family living.

Then recreate: The Father of the Bride House

The vibe: Classic, traditional style

Father of the Bride fully romanticized suburban, family living to a T. Within the first few minutes of the film, you’re introduced to family man George Banks, who delivers a monologue about the love he has for his daughter, his family, and his house. There is such beautiful simplicity in the way he describes teaching his kids how to ride their bikes in the driveway and sleeping in tents in the backyard just for fun. If you want to engulf yourself in warm fuzzies, recreating the Father of the Bride house is a great place to start. “This house was the American dream. A picture perfect home,” Smith shares. “It’s layered with books in the bookcases, pictures in picture frames, and the key was that it wasn’t perfect. It screamed, it’s beautiful, we have kids, and we live here!”

The actual home is a classic Colonial, but creating the same vibe means to not take it too seriously. “With this home, and all Nancy Meyers interiors, you don’t feel like you’re going to mess it up. There’s something about it where you’re not afraid to set a drink down or put your feet up. It’s comfortable. It’s lived in,” Smith continues. To create a homey, cozy vibe in your own home, arrange living room furniture for conversation instead of TV watching, adorn your surfaces with framed family photos, add French doors, and make your backyard a place for dining and family activities.

The Kitchen in It’s Complicated

If you want to feel: Cozy in the kitchen, surrounded by loved ones and home-cooked meals.

Then recreate: Meryl Streep’s home in It’s Complicated

The vibe: California Spanish-Style Ranch with a gorgeous kitchen

The home in It’s Complicated does the same thing all Nancy Meyers’ interiors do without a hitch—it’s warm, inviting, and comfortable. What sets this home apart is the kitchen. Jane (played by Meryl Streep) owns a bakery, so of course the kitchen is the heart of her home. It’s where Streep sips wine with her girlfriends, it’s where her adult children gather as they raid her fridge, and it’s a spot for family meals. The kitchen is sophisticated without being overly fancy, and if you want to create the same vibe in your own home, there are a few things Smith suggests.

“Try a mix of open shelving and closed cabinets. Hang your pots on a rack. Create a space where you can actually sit down and have a meal. Life happens in the kitchen!” he says. These kitchen layers will add charm to your space, and may even make cooking easier with everything in reach. But most importantly, imagine your family or friends all gathering in your kitchen and ask yourself if everyone could be comfortable and happy in the space. Making this gathering place as special as it can be with cozy seating, food and drink is the goal.

Never use the big light again.

If I had to pick one single, solitary rule for my home, it would be to banish overhead lighting. It’s harsh, reminiscent of a doctor’s office, and lacks any sort of warmth or coziness. Not to mention this light can make you look like a spooky ghost, thanks to the shadows it casts over your head. In other words, not cute.

15 Home Lighting Ideas to Brighten Your Space

Interior lighting trends in 2024 aim for a soft glow, no matter what room you decide to be in. Layered lighting, or using different light sources in one space, is in. Switching up decor and furniture is, of course, one way to refresh your space, but lighting can completely transform the vibe and not be overlooked. If you’re curious about infusing your space with a new, cozy ambience—check out these home lighting ideas, room by room.

Kitchen

Pendant lighting

Pendant lighting is not a new home lighting idea—you almost always see them over a kitchen island. But this year, opting for a pendant light with personality is definitely the way to go. In 2024, sculptural statement pieces, oversized pendants, woven materials (hello rattan!) and retro style lighting fixtures are all trending. Not sure what style to embrace? The beauty of pendants is that they’re easy to install and uninstall, so they can change just as simply as your style evolves.

Small table lamps

Placing a small lamp on your kitchen counter is not only adorable, but the light is great too. A mini lamp can be plugged in, or you could opt for a battery operated lamp as well. I have one from Target tucked into a corner of my kitchen, equipped with a Smart bulb that automatically turns on at sunrise every morning. The soft glow from the lamp is so much nicer than the bright, overhead light my kitchen came equipped with—especially early in the morning. There’s nothing like the cozy glow of a mini lamp when I’m making my morning coffee, or whipping up some pre-workout before I head to the gym.

Another plus? Mini lamps don’t have to be expensive. Just be sure to place them in a spot where they won’t be splattered with food while cooking or preparing!

Toe kick lighting

Toe kick lights are ideal for late night snackers or very early risers. These lights can be installed at the bottom of your kitchen cabinets, illuminating the floor so you can see where you’re going without turning on a larger, harsher light. Filling your water before going back to bed just got a lot more pleasant! You can install this yourself with a strip of LED lights with an adhesive backing.

Backyard

Cordless table lamps

I’ve been seeing mini cordless table lamps all over my social media, and they’re always part of outdoor tablescapes. These mini lamps are battery operated and adorable, and most have brightness settings that can be switched just by tapping the base of the lamp. They emit a soft and subtle glow and create a cozy ambience, just like a restaurant would. Think of it like a candle at the center of your table, it’s just a mini lamp instead!

String lights

There’s nothing more charming than strings of lights overhead as you lounge outdoors. Transform your outdoor space with LED string lights. Be generous and include as many as you like—let it be your only source of outdoor lighting. Solar-powered LED string lights are also a great home lighting idea, especially if you live somewhere with reliable sun. They don’t need to be plugged in and you don’t even need to turn them off and on. I have a string or two on my balcony and they create a magical vibe, even just by admiring them indoors.

Pathway lights

Not only are pathway lights beautiful, but they are also great for safety reasons. Dot your backyard paths with lights so you and your guests can see where they’re going. You could even get Smart pathway lights with motion sensors for both safety and energy efficiency. More and more, we’re seeing homeowners put just as much effort into their outdoor spaces as their indoor ones, and pathway lights can guide you into your own little backyard oasis.

Bathroom

Backlit mirrors

There are many home lighting ideas for the bathroom, but one that’s making waves this year are illuminated bathroom mirrors. Backlit mirrors cast light evenly throughout your entire face, making make-up application easy, not to mention a very accurate reflection of yourself. These mirrors come equipped with lights that surround the perimeter, and they give the entire bathroom a polished and unique look.

Statement chandeliers

If you think chandeliers are reserved only for entryways and dining rooms—think again. These statement lighting fixtures are now making their way into bathrooms. Is there anything more chic than a chandelier over a soaking tub? Be sure to install them with warm white bulbs and even better if they can be on a dimmer as well!

Living room inspired lighting

Ever since the pandemic, bathrooms are becoming cozier and cozier. Creating a spa-like environment is top of mind for many. Now we’re seeing bathrooms become even more welcoming with lighting you traditionally see in a living room. Think table lamps on counters and vanities, and pretty pendants and sconces. Don’t be afraid to lean into your creativity and layer lighting so the bathroom becomes a place you want to spend time in. It’s so much easier to romanticize your morning routine when you’re surrounded with soft light!

Living Room

Sculptural floor lamps

Living room home lighting ideas include a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting throughout your space. Floor lamps are wonderful for living rooms, and they make a statement whether they’re on or off. Going for a sculptural floor lamp will create a statement, while also providing cozy light, making your living room all the more inviting.

Table lamps

Instead of relying on one large overhead light, a small collection of table lamps will create a warm and inviting environment. Place them on side tables or nearby cabinets and definitely include one in a reading nook or cozy corner. The gentle, soothing light is ideal for relaxing, lounging, and chatting with friends—perfect for a living room.

Gallery lighting fixtures can go above your framed art, offering a subtle glow to your beloved pieces. Using light to highlight certain design aspects of your home can help draw attention to specific spaces. In addition to art, picture lights are great on top of bookshelves or in place of where you’d put a sconce.

Bedroom

Sconces

Home lighting ideas for the bedroom are all about creating a calm environment. Layered light is key, and scones over nightstands create a cozy, ambient light that’s perfect for bedtime. Sconces mount on the wall and are ideal if you’d like a little more space on the surface of your nightstand. Choose a sconce over a bedside table lamp to maximize space and embrace your own personal style too.

Salt lamps

Himalayan salt lamps emit a warm, subtle glow that is perfect for bedtime. Soft, warm light can help you relax and unwind from the day—all while promoting a good night’s rest. They look gorgeous resting on a dresser or a nightstand, or if you prefer, they even have salt lamp nightlights and bulbs.

Headboard lighting

Ambient light at the back of your headboard? Yes, please! Last year, Sleep Number rolled out beds that included lighting features built in, like reading lights and headboard lights. You can adjust how bright the headboard lights are so you can unwind and even wake up with ease. The lights are at the back end of the headboard, so light emits on the wall behind, creating a cozy effect. If you’re not in the market for a new headboard, installing LED strip lights can also give you a similar effect!

8 Dreamy Bedroom Styles to Transform Your Space

When it comes to design styles, I don’t like to be boxed into just one. Perhaps it’s my Gemini sun, but I like it when I can embrace all the interior styles I love. My living room leans coastal, my office is ultra feminine, and I’m currently planning the cottagecore bedroom of my dreams.

8 Dreamy Bedroom Styles to Transform Your Space

For the longest time, I put my bedroom design plans to the side, since it’s a space that guests don’t really spend time in. But I can see now that creating a calm, serene bedroom is intimate and lovely—and I wish I hadn’t put it off. It’s been fun exploring different bedroom styles to see what fits. If you want to discover your own bedroom style, or you want to give your bedroom a whole new aesthetic, read on for all the inspo.

Cottagecore

If you find yourself daydreaming about running away to the countryside, the cottagecore aesthetic will be right up your alley. A cottagecore bedroom is cozy, simple, and inviting—think vintage furniture, lots of florals, wood, stone, and anything that reminds you of sunny, bucolic bliss. Keeping your color palette soft with pastels and warm neutrals will help set the tone for a calm and relaxing space. Nature-inspired accents like potted plants and flowers are also a must!

Coastal

Who doesn’t want to live close to the water? Luckily you can bring the beach vibes to you, no matter where you live. A coastal-inspired bedroom includes crisp whites, soft blues and greens, woven furniture, and nautical accents. This bedroom style evokes a calm and serene beach-like ambience all year long. Bonus points if you have large, open windows and tons of sunshine. Gauzy curtains can add to the relaxed vibe of your space, especially if there’s a light breeze outside. All you need are ocean sounds and you’ll be transported to the seaside for the sweetest of dreams.

Farmhouse

Farmhouse interiors continue to be wildly popular. It’s hard not to fall for its rustic charm! Opt for wood furniture, black chandeliers, and a neutral color palette if you love this bedroom style. Farmhouse blends both old and new together seamlessly. Incorporating vintage and handcrafted items like quilts or other textiles is a fantastic way to personalize your bedroom and make it extra cozy, all while leaning into the farmhouse aesthetic.

Minimalist

Neutrals reign supreme in a minimalist bedroom. Even if the rest of your home is filled with color and pattern, a minimalist bedroom might be exactly what you need when it comes to a good night’s rest. This bedroom style is easy on your nervous system—whites, creams, and taupes keep everything simple and relaxed. To keep a minimalist bedroom balanced, be sure you’re finding a variety of textures and contrast in your textiles. Embrace different hues of the simple, yet beautiful, neutral color palette as well.

Pro tip: To really embody the minimalist style, keep your phone out of the bedroom. A distraction-free bedroom will make falling asleep that much easier, and you’ll wonder why you didn’t kick your phone out sooner.

Maximalist

Maximalism has been trending all year. This bedroom style is all about bold, eclectic decor, colors, and patterns. It’s highly individualized, and really about decorating with whatever brings you the most joy. Look for unique art, elaborate bedding, and interesting decor pieces to make your bedroom your own, personalized retreat. One specific maximalist trend I’ve been loving is pattern drenching, or adorning your room with a single pattern, top to bottom. This trend embraces a matchy-matchy vibe—why not have your wallpaper, drapes and bedding all go together? It’s a fun way to feel cocooned in your own personal style.

Whimsical

If you love bright color palettes, decor that makes you smile, and pieces that are just plain fun—your aesthetic is whimsical. There’s a sense of playfulness to these spaces, making this a perfect bedroom style if you want your room to feel magical and inspiring. Don’t hesitate to buy quirky furniture (the strawberry side table I keep seeing on TikTok comes to mind!), hang fairy lights from the ceiling, or splurge on the canopy bed that makes you feel like a queen.

Moody

Rich color palettes, atmospheric lighting, and a taste for sophistication are what moody bedrooms are made from. Deeper hues like black, navy, and burgundy are go-to’s for this bedroom style. While some might prefer a lighter, brighter color palette, others crave the cozy, intimate atmosphere a darker room creates. Painting the walls will instantly switch up the vibe in your moody bedroom. Opt for a large piece of art with colors that match your nightstands or pillows to create a balanced space.

Japandi

There’s a lot of beauty in simplicity, and this bedroom style oozes peace and tranquility.

Japandi is a blend of Japanese and Scandinavian design aesthetics. Imagine if hygge (the Scandinavian practice of embracing all things cozy) and wabi-sabi (the ancient Japanese philosophy of contented slow living) joined forces to create the ultimate relaxed environment and you have Japandi. Known for its clean lines, natural textures and neutral color palette, it’s a perfect bedroom style to try if you’re looking for some zen.

Choose white and cream linens, keep a sprig of something green like eucalyptus on your nightstand, and keep your space a clutter-free zone. This will result in a peaceful and inviting bedroom that will make you want to curl up and catch up on some zzz’s.
